KANNAPOLIS – The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency recently recognized the city of Kannapolis for 25 years of working to improve housing opportunities for its residents.

Scott Farmer and Mike Handley presented the city a plaque during a ceremony at the residence of Vickie Willis, a recent recipient of an accessibility ramp. Construction of the ramp was through a partnership between the city and the Housing Finance Agency.

Over the past two decades, the city and the agency have partnered to assist more than 100 families in Kannapolis. Assistance has included home repairs such as new roofs, construction of handicap ramps and other accessibility modifications to help senior citizens, veterans and people with disabilities.

The repairs have resulted in people being able to stay in their homes with their families versus having to move into institutional settings. The cost of the repairs and improvements total over $1 million.

“We appreciate the partnership with the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. Without their help, we would not be able to assist those in our community who need help the most,” said Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant.

Adopt-a-Street

Kannapolis is looking for groups interested in joining the Adopt-a-Street program.

The program recognizes organizations that commit to clean a one-mile section of street at least four times a year for two years. Each organization is provided equipment, a street sign that recognizes the organization, and a certificate of participation.

JDH Contracting recently committed to the program and picked up trash for the first time on a Friday afternoon. Its sign is on Biscayne Drive.
