Intimidators fall in home debut

The Kannapolis Intimidators lost to Asheville 4-1 in their home opener at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Monday.
Logan Johnson belted a long solo shot in the sixth inning for the Intimidators’ first homer of the season to cut Asheville’s lead to 2-1, but the Intimidators (3-2) couldn’t score again.
Sheng-An Kuo pitched well for the Tourists (4-1), and the Asheville bullpen got the last 10 outs.
Johnson and former Duke standout Jim Gallagher had two hits each for the Intimidators.
n Prep baseball
Zach Russell-Myers tossed a two-hitter and struck out seven batters as Davie County defeated West Forsyth 5-0 at Rich Park in a CPC makeup game played on Monday.
Myers got all the runs he needed in the third inning when the War Eagles (13-2, 3-0 CPC) scored four times. Shelton Howard had a single and scored. Zeb Cope drilled an RBI double, and Garrett Benge knocked in two more runs with a single.
Benge collected his third RBI in the fifth when he drove home Colby Seaford.
Davie is at home tonight against Mount Tabor.
– Chris Ivey knocked in Jason Gray with the winning run in the seventh inning as West Davidson edged East Davidson 5-4 for a CCC victory on Monday.
The Green Dragons (9-4, 3-2) visit Central Davidson on Wednesday.
– Central Davidson (5-5, 2-2) edged South Davidson 5-4.
Appalachian State signee Zack Briggs went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer for the Spartans, while Nick Musgrave was the winning pitcher.
Central plays host to Salisbury in the CCC tonight.
– East soccer beats Carson
East Rowan’s soccer team stayed in contention for a playoff berth with a 2-0 victory over county and NPC rival Carson on Monday.
Erin Kettner scored on a free kick for her first goal of the season. Rachel Hardy Simpson scored on an assist by fellow freshman Katy Bryant.
Briana McLeod and Tiffany McQueen led the defensive effort for the Mustangs (5-6, 5-5), along with keeper Colleen Cowie, who recorded three saves.
East out-shot the Cougars 25-5.
– Salisbury tennis still perfect
Salisbury’s tennis team improved to 9-0 overall with a 6-3 win over East Davidson on Monday.
Joe Goodman, Stephen Page, Tyler Helig, Carl Ritchie and Grant Martz won singles matches for the Hornets, who improved to 6-0 in the CCC.
Page and Helig won in doubles.

– Catawba tennis
Catawba tennis teams dropped SAC matches against Carson-Newman on Saturday.
The men lost 5-3, while the women (11-7, 2-2) fell 5-2.
The Catawba men (12-8, 3-2) were swept by Mars Hill on Monday.

– Indian signs pro soccer contract
Former Catawba soccer standout Nate Zuzga has signed a pro contract with Cary’s Carolina Railhawks, who compete in the USL First Division.
In three preseason games, Zuzga scored two goals.
Zuzga joins Gareth Turnbull, who plays in his home country of New Zealand for Canterbury United, as recent Catawba graduates into the pro ranks.
Former Catawba All-American Kenny Crowe had been in trials with the Richmond Kickers, a USL Second Division Club.
– Cooter catches two passes
North Carolina’s Cooter Arnold (Davie County) caught two passes for 26 yards in the Blue-White spring scrimmage at Kenan Stadium on Friday.
Arnold, who has spent time at defensive back and running back, is now playing receiver.
Greg Paulus’ younger brother, Mike, made an auspicious debut for the Tar Heels.
The redshirt freshman quarterback was 11-of-16 for 159 yards.
– East track second to Trojans
East Rowan’s boys track team was nipped 76.5-76 by NPC foe Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.
Carson was third with 32.5 points.
Winners for East included:
– Nolan Stehr, shot put (48 feet, 10 inches)
– Jacobius Jones, triple jump (41-10)
– Nathan Robbins, discus (130-4)
– Wayne Parker, pole vault (13-0)
– Chase Burris, 300 hurdles (44.35 seconds)
Carson winners were Daniel Yates in the long jump (20 feet) and 100 meters (11.23) and Travis Jordan in the 400 (53.28) and 200 (23.21).
– Woodleaf Civitan golf tournament
The annual Woodleaf Civitan Golf Tournament will be played April 26 at Foxwood Golf Club.
There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Registration and lunch begin at 11:30 a.m.
The cost is $40 per player or $160 per team. Snacks will be provided. Proceeds will be divided between West Rowan Bible Teachers Association and the Woodleaf Civitans Scholarship Fund.

– Church golf league
The 2008 Rowan County Church Golf League organizational meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today at the McCanless clubhouse. Each church team should have at least one representative in attendance. Contact Scott Perry at 704-637-1235.
– Pudding Ridge golf
The third annual Davie County Hospital Golf Tournament will take place at Pudding Ridge Golf Course on Saturday, April 26.
The tournament begins with lunch at 12:30 p.m., followed by a shotgun start at 2. Team registration is $300 and includes green fee, cart and lunch for four. The cost for individual players is $75.
Team prizes include $200 for third place, $300 for second and $500 for first.
In addition to player fees, several sponsorship levels are being offered for the Golf Tournament. Gold Level sponsorship, which includes scoreboard signage, a hole sponsor and four-person team fee, is offered for $600. A Silver Level sponsorship is $400, while Bronze Level sponsorship is $300. Hole sponsorships are available for $150 each.

– GARS
Fifty-six golfers played with a Captain’s Choice format at Corbin Hills on Monday.
The first-place team at 8-under consisted of Tony LaBarbera, Bert Bollinger, Bill Bradley and Cliff Cutrell.
Taking second place, also at 8-under, was the team of Lanny Morris, Ken Miller, Andy Anderson and Paul Dombrowski.
The third-place team also shot 8-under. It consisted of Tom Talbert, Bill Kernodle, Gene Dukes and Harry Hammer.
Jim Adams, Winston Mahaffey and Larry Perrell won closest-to-pin honors.
– Millbridge golf
Millbridge Elementary PTA is holding its escond annual golf tournament at Warrior on Saturday, April 12.
The format is Captain’s Choice, with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start.
Lunch and sign-in starts at noon.
Entry fee is $220 per team ($55 per person). Some holes are available for sponsorship.
