Salisbury cruised past Central Davidson 5-1 on Wednesday to remain undefeated.
Jamie Dagenhart and Lindsey Davis scored two goals apiece for the second straight night, and Maria Tonseth also scored for the Hornets (10-0, 6-0 CCC). Kaitlyn Cuevas and Tonseth had two assists each, and Karen Presnell added another.
Salisbury trailed Central Davidson 1-0 at halftime before winning 2-1 the first time the teams played, and Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said their first game was “the toughest 80 minutes we faced all year long.”
Parrish also worried about having Wednesday night be a “trap game” after Salisbury defeated an East Davidson team Tuesday that had given the Hornets problems recently. He didn’t want Salisbury to overlook its next opponent, and Davis scored three minutes into the game last night.
“That kind of set tone for match,” Parrish said. “I don’t want to say it completely alleviated my anxiety, but it helped out.”
– In the NPC, Mooresville routed East Rowan 11-0.
The Mustangs (5-7 overall, 5-6 NPC) had hoped to neutralize two of Mooresville’s offensive weapons with a pair of defenders, but coach Eduel Atkins said that strategy fell apart when the Blue Devils scored 14 minutes into the game. The game turned “ugly” from there.
Atkins said Erin Kettner did play well against Mooresville, which is ranked sixth in the 3A state coaches’ poll.
– Catawba softball splits
Catawba split a SAC softball doubleheader at Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday.
LMU took the opener 5-2, while Catawba claimed a 16-11 win in the nightcap.
Catawba (22-21, 4-8) exploded for 13 hits to take the second game, including a pair of homers by Ryann Baker (East Rowan). Baker had a three-run homer in the first, a two-run blast in the third and added a run-scoring double in the sixth.
Cassie Markham had a two-run triple. Jac White (West Rowan) had two RBIs.
Rachel Christian picked up the win in relief of Meghan Cobb.
– Intimidators lose
The Intimidators dropped their third straight game to Asheville, falling 11-3 in front of the biggest crowd of the young season on Wednesday morning.
Jim Gallagher led the Intimidators with three hits. Joe Persichina and Christian Marrero drove in runs.
The visiting Tourists had a five-run sixth inning to open an 8-0 lead.
The series concludes tonight at 7:05 p.m. with the first Thirsty Thursday of the season.
– Jayvee baseball
West Davidson defeated Salisbury 13-11 on Wednesday. Winning pitcher Will Treichler scored four runs. Joe Patterson had four hits, including two doubles. Patrick Boger went 3-for-3 with four RBIs for the Green Dragons (8-3, 5-0).
– Prep softball
East Rowan stayed unbeaten in the NPC with a 1-0 victory over West Iredell on Tuesday.
Lindsay Smith scored the only run in the seventh for the Mustangs (8-1, 7-0).
Chelsea White pitched the shutout and struck out 10.
– Prep tennis
East Rowan blanked South Rowan 9-0 on Wednesday.
Winning singles matches for the Mustangs were Andrew Blank, Cody Kahn, Mike Meilinger, Justin Brown, Nick Brown and Cody Stewart. Winning doubles teams were Blank-Justin Brown, Kahn-Meilinger and Jason Hammonds-Chris Fleming.
– Erwin downed Mooresville Middle 6-3 to stay undefeated.
– Prep baseball
Zack Wright pitched five innings for his first win and Carson pounded out 14 hits to beat Statesville 9-2 in an NPC game on Wednesday.
Carson trailed 2-1 before erupting for four runs in the third inning. Wright opened the inning with a single, and Randy Shepherd followed with a two-run homer. Hits by Scott Ashby and Jeremy Mullis and Zach Grkman’s sac fly plated two more runs.
Wright walked six, but he also struck out six before Will Misenheimer came out of the bullpen to pitch two scoreless innings.
Wright, Shepherd, Ashby, Gunnar Hogan and Tyler Freeze had two hits each for the Cougars.
Statesville’s David Moose pitched a complete game and fanned 12.
– Lake Norman’s Nick Lomascolo outdueled Northwest Cabarrus’ Matt Mariano in a battle of left-handers, and the Wildcats took a 4-1 NPC victory.
Kevin Gradert had three hits and scored two runs for the Wildcats.
– West Davidson clubbed Central Davidson 13-5 for a CCC victory and moved into the fight for second place.
Jordan Hudson (4-1) was the winning pitcher for the Green Dragons. Alex Grubb homered, and Brandon Smith collected three hits and three RBIs.
Zack Briggs homered for Central.
– A.L. Brown lost 6-0 to Anson County on Tuesday in the SPC. The Wonders were limited to two hits. Jacob Wright took the loss.
– College golf
Catawba finished seventh out of 13 teams at the two-day Agnis McAmis Memorial women’s golf tournament which concluded on Tuesday. Belmont Abbey claimed the team title with a score of 606, topping runner-up Pfeiffer by seven shots. Catawba had a two-day total of 673.
Pfeiffer’s Charlene Reid shot a final-round 68 and totalled 140 for second place. Kelsey Babos led the Catawba contingent with a 10th-place finish. She had rounds of 78 and 76 to finish at 154.n Jaguars volleyball
Salisbury Academy’s volleyball team defeated Davidson Day and North Hills on Tuesday to improve to 3-0.
Jenna Boyd, Jenny Patel, Madeline Hoskins, Alexandra Drye and Caroline Graham led the Jaguars.
– Ward’s first Double-A win
Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) was the winning pitcher in New Britain’s 3-2 Eastern League victory over New Hampshire on Tuesday.
Ward relieved and got the last out in the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth. He was the winning hurler when New Britain scored in the bottom of the ninth. It was the first win for Ward at the Double-A level.
– College baseball
North Carolina’s Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) saw his hitting streak end at 27 games in a 2-0 loss to Elon on Tuesday.
It was the fourth-longest streak in UNC history.
Seager was the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for March 31-April 5.
He leads the ACC with 19 doubles and 40 RBIs.
– Davidson’s Brett Shore (South Rowan) had two hits in a 5-4 loss to Virginia Tech on Tuesday.
– Catawba tennis splitsCatawba’s tennis teams split with SAC foe Newberry on Wednesday.
Catawba won the women’s match 5-4, while the Newberry men claimed a 6-3 decision.
Catawba pulled out a tight women’s match when Nikiah Knox won a three-set match at No. 4.

– Pfeiffer lacrosse
Pfeiffer’s Eddie Gourley has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas men’s lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week during week number seven in the 2008 season.
He tallied 10 goals for the week.
– Millbridge golf tournament
Millbridge Elementary PTA is holding its second annual golf tournament at Warrior on Saturday, April 12.
The format is Captain’s Choice, with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start.
Lunch and sign-in starts at noon.
Entry fee is $220 per team ($55 per person).

– Davie tourney
The third annual Davie County Hospital Golf Tournament will take place at Pudding Ridge Golf Course on Saturday, April 26.
The tournament begins with lunch at 12:30 p.m., followed by a shotgun start at 2. Team registration is $300 and includes green fee, cart and lunch for four. The cost for individual players is $75.
Team prizes include $200 for third place, $300 for second and $500 for first.
