Catawba’s baseball team enters its final SAC series in first place.
The Indians (29-14, 13-5) take on Mars Hill (29-18, 8-9) tonight at 7:30 p.m. and in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader that begins at 2:30 p.m.
Carson-Newman is in second place in the SAC with an 11-6 record and plays three games this weekend against third-place Lenoir-Rhyne.
This is also Catawba’s reunion weekend. Nearly 100 former Indians are expected to be honored during weekend festivities and recognized between games of Saturday’s doubleheader.
– Minor League baseball
Beloit’s Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) struck out seven batters in 22/3 innings in a 4-1 loss to Peoria on Wednesday.
Steedley allowed one hit and one walk. His ERA is 0.00 after three relief appearances.
– Binghamton’s Bobby Parnell got no decision in his start in the Eastern League against Erie on Thursday.
Parnell pitched 42/3 innings. He allowed three hits, six walks and four earned runs. He struck out one.
Erie won the game 10-7.
– Intimidators end skid
Anthony Carter gave up a first inning home run but cruised after that as Kannapolis ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Asheville at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Thursday.
Carter (2-0) lasted six innings. He allowed four hits and one run and fanned seven.
Hector Santiago threw two scoreless innings, while Henry Mabee recorded his first save.
– Prep track
Salisbury swept a home CCC track meet on Thursday.
The Hornet girls scored 107 points to beat North Rowan (57), East Davidson (44) and Lexington (41).
Salisbury took first in 10 events, including three relays.
Shawane Saulters and Dasia McGill swept the hurdles events for Salisbury.
– Salisbury’s boys (118 points) topped North (84), Lexington (49) and East Davidson (27).
Salisbury placed first in nine events, including three relays.
John Bostick, Daishion Barger and Rodney Smith swept the hurdles events for North Rowan.
* The Rowan County Meet is scheduled for Tuesday at East Rowan.
– Prep softball
Kristin Holshouser pitched a one-hitter to lead North Rowan to a 17-0 CCC victory over Lexington on Thursday.
– Prep tennis
Carson won all three doubles matches to nip NPC and county rival East Rowan 5-4 on Thursday.
The doubles teams of Cory Kluttz-Jonathan Hough, Joe Keophilovanh-D.J. Safrit and Mike Wirz-Frank Thomas took victories for Carson.
Singles winners for the Cougars were Hough and Ronnie Hayward.
Winners for the Mustangs (3-6) were Andrew Blank, Mike Meilinger, Justin Brown and Nick Brown.
* Salisbury stayed unbeaten in the CCC with a 7-2 victory over West Davidson on Thursday.
Winning in singles for the Hornets were Joe Goodman, Steven Page, Tyler Heilig, Benton Whitaker, Carl Ritchie and Grant Martz.
The combo of Lewis Young-Seth Gentry won for the Hornets in doubles.
* West Rowan defeated Carson 6-3 on Wednesday.
Singles winners for the Falcons were Joel Brittain, Ricky Meek, Jesse Myers, Chris Holmes and Landon Locklear.
Winning in doubles for West was the tandem of Sam Daniel and Holmes.
– Prep baseball
North Davidson handed Ledford a 12-2 defeat in a non-conference matchup of Davidson County powers on Thursday.
Ricky Vaughn (3-1) took the loss for the Panthers (13-2), but he did have two hits and two RBIs.
Zach Joyce was the winning pitcher.
– Middle school baseball
West Rowan Middle (3-1) defeated China Grove 5-4 by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.  
Hunter Tetter drove in four runs for West with two extra-base hits. Taylor Garczynski had three hits, while Corbin Foster had two.  
Connor Edwards came on in relief to get the win. He shut down China Grove for three innings.
– College baseball
Patrick Atwell (South Rowan) and Seth Waller (West Rowan) had two hits each for Belmont Abbey in a 6-0, 9-1 doubleheader sweep of Carson-Newman on Wednesday.
– Rowan Aquatic Club
Rowan Aquatic Club swimmers have posted times that place them in the top 16 in the state.
Brandon Lemmon, a West Rowan Middle sixth-grader, qualifies in the 100 free, 50 free, 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke and 100 Individual Medley.
Taylor Rodenhuis, a Salisbury Academy sixth-grader, qualifies in the 100, 200, 500 and 1650 freestyle, the 50 backstroke, the 50 and 100 butterfly and the 200 and 400 IM.
Sarah Agner, an Erwin seventh-grader, qualifies in the 1650 freestyle.
Garrett Spake, an eighth-grader at Tyro, qualifies in the 500, 1000 and 1650 free.
Andrew McCollister, a freshman at Salisbury, qualifies in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Madi Ralston, a Salisbury sophomore, qualifies in the 1650 free.
Garrison Stevens, a Salisbury junior, qualifies in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Gavin Spake, a West Davidson senior, qualifies in the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyle, the 100 and 200 butterfly and the 200 IM.
– Prep golf
Salisbury finished second to Ledford at a CCC golf match at Sapona on Thursday.
Ledford had four golfers shoot 37 for a 148 total.
Salisbury shot 167. Roy Dixon, who placed seventh overall, shot 39 to lead the Hornets.
Clint Riddle (41), Randy Almeida (43) and Zack Kirchin (44) also had counting scores for the Hornets.
North Rowan finished seventh at 208. Miller Sokolowski (46), Dillon Mason (52), Jon Robertson (55) and Andrew Hallett (55) scored for the Cavaliers.
– Middle school golf
China Grove golfers defeated Southeast 166-193 at Warrior on Wednesday.
Leading China Grove was Alex Austin with a 34. Ryan Craft (39), Dalton Parrot (46), Chris Shuping (47), Spencer Knowles (48) and Jake Barnhardt (48) also competed for the Red Devils.
Matt Yates led the Patriot with a 45. Garrett Yelton (47), Chuck Parks (49), Ryan Burke (52), Connor Gantt (52) and Savannah Ware (55) competed for Southeast.
n Historic girls golf
Salisbury Academy and Sacred Heart played what some believe to be the first middle school girls golf match in North Carolina history on Thursday.
Salisbury Academy came out on top 133-173. Medalist Isabella Rusher shot 39. Lily Yatawara shot 44, and Mackenzie Beaver shot 50.
Madeline Hoskins (51) and Jordan DeJaco (58) also played for SA.
Scoring for Sacred Heart were Kelly Dulkoski (48), Jordan Pring (56) and Katelyn Storey (59). Also playing in the groundbreaking match were Allana Ansboro (59) and Anna Tonseth (60).
– Lee sixth in golf event
Salisbury’s Allison Lee finished sixth in a Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour event at Bermuda Run.
Lee shot 79-83 ó 162 and finished 20 shots back of the winner, Cary’s Katherine Perry.
– Golf tournaments
The third annual Davie County Hospital Golf Tournament will take place at Pudding Ridge Golf Course on Saturday, April 26.
The tournament begins with lunch at 12:30 p.m., followed by a shotgun start at 2. Team registration is $300 and includes green fee, cart and lunch for four. The cost for individual players is $75.
Team prizes include $200 for third place, $300 for second and $500 for first.
