Catawba’s baseball team split Saturday’s South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Catawba, ranked 21st in Division II,  bounced back with a 13-7 victory after losing the opener, 6-2.

The teams will decide the series today in Hickory.

Lenoir-Rhyne pitcher Tom St. Clair dominated the first game. He went the distance and held Catawba (12-4, 4-1)  to eight hits. He struck out 16 batters while walking two. St. Clair earned national honors last week when he struck out 17 against Anderson.

Justin Dean hit a two-run homer that gave the Bears (14-4, 3-2)  a two-run lead.

Jeremy Simpson (West Rowan) and Luke Setzer (East Rowan) had two hits each for the Indians.

Simpson and Setzer stayed hot in the second game with three hits each.

Setzer belted a two-run homer, and Bryce Fowler produced a two-run triple.

Lenoir-Rhyne made things interesting in the fifth, cutting an 8-1 deficit to 8-6. David Newcomer capped that inning with a three-run homer.

Chance Bowden (Salisbury,) homered in the sixth to put Catawba up 9-6 and the Indians used a pair of errors in the seventh to plate four more runs.

Nick Coble (2-0)  pitched into the fifth inning and had five strikeouts. Heath Mitchem (Carson) earned his first save.

The teams will conclude the three-game series today. First pitch is at 1 p.m.

  

West baseball wins

Austin Love and Brett Graham combined on a shutout as West Rowan’s baseball team won at Mooresville, 1-0, on Saturday.

Love pitched into the fourth inning, and Graham (1-0) went the rest of the way.

Love and Graham combined for 13 strikeouts.

Trevor Atwood’s first-inning double plated the only run of the game. Daniel Durham had the only other hit for the Falcons.

Prep baseball

South Rowan’s baseball team won on the road at A.L. Brown, 9-4, on Saturday.

South  (2-1) trailed 4-2 when it rallied for five runs in the fifth.  South had 10 hits.

Matt Baucom, Justin Rodgers and Ryan O’Kelly had two hits each for the Wonders (2-1).

   Baucom struck out 15 batters in Friday’s 5-2  A.L. Brown win vs. East Meck.

Salisbury (1-1) lost to Trinity, 8-3, in a home game played   at Robertson Stadium on Friday.

Bo Rusher and Griffin Myers had two hits each.

Salisbury had seven hits,  but made four errors. Joe Steinman pitched four innings for the Hornets.

Stallions win two

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions swept Smoky Mountain, 4-2 and 5-4, in a baseball doubleheader on Saturday.

Seth Cauble, Dalton Lankford, Camron Wallace, McConner Wallace and Clay Pinion led the Stallions at the plate in the first game. Camron Wallace pitched a three-hitter.

   In the second game, Camron Wallace had a double and a walk-off homer. Pinion had three hits. AJ Knight had a two-run triple. Trent Berry picked up the win in relief.

The Stallions (7-0) will play at Southlake Christian on Monday.

Prep golf

Salisbury’s Alex Antosek was medalist in a recent match against Davie County at Oak Valley Golf Club in Advance.

Antosek shot a 36 for the nine-hole match won by the War Eagles. Salisbury freshman Hank Robins followed with a 38.

Prep basketball

Hickory Ridge’s girls won against Freedom in Saturday’s regional final in Greensboro, 55-42.

The Bulls (31-0) got 17 points from Jiera Shears and 15 from Gabby Smith.

The Bulls will take on Northern Guilford for the state title at the Smith Center next Saturday at 5 p.m.

Wendell Moore Jr. had 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead Cox Mill’s boys (24-6)  to a 64-52 win against Freedom in Saturday’s regional final in Greensboro.

The Chargers will battle Eastern Guilford for the state crown next Saturday in the Smith Center at 7:30.

  

College men’s hoops

Augusta senior Keshun Sherrill was named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year. He’s among the nation’s top 15 scorers, averaging 22.6 points per game.

Top-seeded Augusta lost to Columbus State in the PBC tourney on Saturday, 62-57. Sherrill scored 22 points.

Augusta still is likely to get a berth in the D-II  playoffs. Sherrill is 19 points shy of  the school and conference scoring record.

Top-seeded Pfeiffer was upset by fourth-seeded King, 100-98, at Merner Gym on Saturday in a Conference Carolinas tournament semifinal.

Josh Calhoun’s 31 points weren’t enough for the Falcons. Pfeiffer made 17 3-pointers.

Six King players scored in double figures, with Jordan Floyd and Hunter Leveau getting 17 apiece.

King plays No. 2 seed Limestone for the championship today at Pfeiffer.

College baseball

Matt Vernon (Davie) had three hits in Appalachian State’s 7-3 win against Western Carolina on Saturday.

Zach Mullinax (A.L. Brown) was named Salem International University’s Male Student-Athlete of the Week for February 20-27.

Mullinax went 5-for-10 in four games during the week and also walked three times.

College track

In the Braves Classic, hosted by UNC Pembroke, UNCP’s Kellen Corson (A.L. Brown) won the 800 (1:59.90) and was second in the 1500 (4:14.04).

UNCP’s Jonathan Martin (Carson) was fifth in the 5000 meters (15:50.99).

College softball

Catawba lost both games on Saturday afternoon at the CSU Classic softball tournament being held at Cougar Field on the campus of Columbus State.

Catawba (6-17) fell 11-3 to Auburn Montgomery and 9-1 to Columbus State.

Delane Smith, Katherine Shumaker and Leah Huggins drove in runs for the Indians in the opener.

Kristen Stinnard and Taylor Martin (West Rowan)) had two hits each for Catawba in Game 2.

Catawba plays twomore  on Sunday, facing Barry at 10:30 a.m. and Columbus State at 2:30 pm.

Men’s lacrosse

Queens scored the first four goals and won against Catawba, 13-6, on Saturday. Liam Lynch scored two goals for Catawba.
