Holmes signs with Pitt CC

East Rowan pitcher/first baseman Trey Holmes has signed with Pitt Community College in Greenville, N.C.
Pitt is ranked 14th nationally among junior colleges.
Holmes, who is about 75 percent recovered from an elbow injury he suffered last spring on a slide at Davie County, is batting .308 with 11 RBIs for the Mustangs this season and is 1-0 on the mound.
Holmes batted .263 with three homers, 15 doubles and 50 RBIs for the Rowan Legion team last summer.
An all-county receiver/DB in football and a starter for the Mustangs in basketball, Holmes has never concentrated on baseball year-round and has Division I potential in that sport.

n Minor Leagues
Triple-A Toledo’s Jeremy Johnson (Mooresville) pitched five strong innings to beat Buffalo 4-1 on Friday night.
Johnson struck out three, while allowing an unearned run and two hits.
Johnson outpitched Jeremy Sowers, a Buffalo hurler who has started quite a few games for the Cleveland Indians.
The top three hitters in Buffalo’s lineup ó Josh Barfield, Jason Tyner and Ben Francisco ó have seen significant big-league time.
Johnson’s ERA is 1.00.
n Intimidators pounded
Hickory scored six runs in the second inning and roughed up the Kannapolis Intimidators 14-1 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Saturday.
Hickory’s Dustin Molleken allowed one run and six hits in six innings.
Logan Johnson and Joe Persichina had two hits each for Kannapolis.
The teams play today at 5:05 p.m.
n College lacrosse
Catawba’s lacrosse team lost to ninth-ranked Wingate 10-7 on Saturday.
Wingate (11-2, 4-0) jumped out 9-2 and held on to clinch the Deep South Conference championship. Kurt Green scored three goals for the Indians (6-6, 3-1). Marty Tuohy scored twice.
n Limestone beat Pfeiffer 16-4 on Saturday.
n College baseball
Whit Merrifield (Davie County) drove in the winning run for South Carolina in a 7-6 win over Auburn on Friday.n Pfeiffer pitcher John McDaniel (Davie) will miss the rest of the season with an injury. McDaniel (2-3) whiffed 42, while walking eight in 54 innings.
n Sophomore infielder Rob Lyerly hit his seventh homer of the season in Charlotte’s 5-4 loss to Xavier on Friday.
Lyerly’s parents, Robert and Sandy, are Rowan natives.
n Sophomore second baseman Wes Hobson is batting .278 with four homers and 28 RBIs for Appalachian State.
Hobson had three hits in a 5-3 win over Georgia Southern on Saturday.
Hobson’s father, Gil, starred in several sports at North Rowan.
n Garrett Sherrill (A.L. Brown) saved Saturday’s game for the Mountaineers.
n Pfeiffer split with Erskine on Saturday, winning 7-6 before losing 7-3.
n Catawba softball
Catawba’s softball team was swept by Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.
The Bears clinched a share of the SAC championship with 5-3 (nine innings) and 7-1 decisions.
Brittany Cherry’s two-out double in the ninth carried Lenoir-Rhyne (37-10, 12-2) to victory in the opener.
Jac White hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Catawba (22-23, 4-10) and drove in the Indians’ other run with an eighth-inning groundout.
Allie Marshall had two hits. Losing pitcher Meghan Cobb threw a six-hitter with eight strikeouts.
Taylor Queen hit a three-run homer for the Bears in the nightcap, while Kat Rivers went 4-for-4.
Sam Vidal hit a homer for the Indians.
n Jayvee baseball
North Rowan beat Lexington 14-4 in five innings. Thomas Baker, Hunter Feezor, Anthony Ferguson, Dusty Agner, Jeffery Nelson and Sam Brooks had two hits each for the Cavaliers.
Nelson was the winning pitcher in relief. Ferguson swiped five bases.
North (2-9) is at Salisbury on Monday afternoon.
n Middle school baseball
Jordan Kennerly’s two-run single in the 11th inning lifted Corriher-Lipe to a 4-1 victory over China Grove.
Matt Miller pitched seven innings for the Yellow Jackets and struck out nine. Dillon Parker worked the last four frames to pick up the win.
Parker had three hits, while Kennerly, Blake Morrow and Parker Hubbard had two each for the Jackets (2-1, 1-1).
Connor Bridges had three hits for the Red Devils (0-2).
n Prep softball
West Rowan stayed in the NPC race with a 4-1 win at Northwest Cabarrus on Friday. West and Northwest (8-4, 8-2) trail East Rowan by two games.
Erin Foster homered for West. Olivia Izze had a two-run single. Stacie Raney had an RBI single.
Sabrina Stephens was the winning pitcher. She scattered 10 hits.
n West Forsyth handed North Davidson its first loss (1-0) in a CPC matchup behind the hurling of Jordan Fulton.
n Women’s golf
Blanche Golver won a Women’s Golf Association event at Country Club of Salisbury. Betsey Edgeworth was second and Cindy Carmazzi third.
n SA volleyball
Salisbury Academy’s volleyball team fell 2-1 to North Hills and 2-0 to Woodlawn. Alexandra Drye’s serves led the Jaguars (3-2).
n SA tennis
Salisbury Academy’s coed tennis team beat Woodlawn 9-0.
Winners for the Jaguars (1-1) included Chad Hoskins, Michael Ogden, Joy Loeblein, Erika Nelson, Alan Lebowitz, Brock Overcash and Thacher Shields.
