West Rowan junior Caleb Mauldin was named to the  All-District 11 first team by the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association.

Carson junior Jamarius Hairston was named to the  second team.

The Player of the Year for District 11 was North Surry’s Carter Phillips, a Catawba signee.

In girls basketball, South Rowan sophomore Janiya Downs was an All-District 11 second team pick.

Carson junior Olivia Gabriel made the third team for District 11.

Cox Mill’s Wendell Moore Jr. was named District 9 Player of the Year.

Robinson’s Lavar Batts Jr. was named to the all-district first team.

In girls basketball, Hickory Ridge’s Nia Daniel and Gabby Smith were second team all-district.

Central Cabarrus’ Mahaley Holit is on the first team  for District 9.

The Cox Mill boys and Hickory Ridge girls will be  in championship games today at the Smith Center.

Prep baseball

Maddux Holshouser keyed Carson’s 7-0 SPC win at Robinson on Friday.

Holshouser allowed one hit in 5 2/3 innings and struck out five.

Cole Hales and Luke Barringer had two hits each for the Cougars.

Robby Clarke struck out 11 batters in five innings and led A.L. Brown to an 8-0 MECKA win against Vance on Friday.

College baseball

  Colton Laws (Carson) pitched seven shutout innings in Charlotte’s 2-0 win at East Carolina on Friday.

Laws didn’t get the decision, but he struck out nine and allowed two hits.

Laws has a streak of 20 1/3 scoreless innings.

  Catawba jumped on visiting Coker with 10 runs over the first three innings and took a 12-1 win in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park.

The 22nd-ranked Indians improved to 14-6 overall and 6-1 in the SAC, while the Cobras fell to 12-7 and 4-3.

Nick Coble  singled home a run with two outs in the first and doubled home a pair in a seven-run Catawba third that broke the game open. The Indians sent a dozen men to the plate in the third, including a stretch of eight straight batters reaching safely.

Russ Weiker (2-1) allowed seven runs in seven innings.

Clay Young  and Caleb Link (West Rowan) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Catawba rapped out 16 hits with Coble, Luke Setzer (East Rowan), Kyle Smith, Zac Almond, Chance Bowden (Salisbury), Jeremy Simpson (West Rowan) and Jackson Raper all picking up two.

The teams will wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader at Newman Park today, beginning at 1 p.m.

Prep softball

Maddie Trexler had four hits in East Rowan’s 4-0 SPC win against Concord on Friday.

Ashlyn Mills drove in two runs.

Karley Teague was the winning pitcher.

Davie County routed Reagan, 15-0.

Sierra Ferguson hit a three-run homer, and Olivia Boger pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts.

Ferguson drove in five runs. Anna Devereaux had three hits and three RBIs.

Prep girls soccer

Madison Henry and Rhiannon Kimmer had three goals each and two assists apiece in South Rowan’s 7-0 SPC win at West Rowan on Friday.

Kiersten Morgan scored the other South goal.

Michelle Rivera had the shutout in goal. Karigan Ford  had two assists.

Kannapolis Komets

The Kannapolis Komets girls travel basketball club will hold tryouts on  Sunday, March 12, at Kannapolis Middle School from  1:30-3 p.m.

The club plays in tournaments primarily in the Piedmont.

Girls who will be rising freshmen, sophomores and juniors are encouraged to try out.
