The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool Stallions varsity baseball team earned its first trip to the Homeschool World Series with a top-four finish in the East Regional held in Marietta, GA.
The Stallions competed against 15 other teams from as far away as Wisconsin.
Each year the Homeschool World Series Association holds a national tournament for all homeschool teams in the country. The top four from the East Regional and top four from the West Regional play for the national championship in Pensacola, Fla. on May 18-22.
After a victory over Woodstock, Ga., and a loss to Augusta, Ga., the Stallions won twice on Friday against North Atlanta and Greeneville, Tenn., to reach the championship game against Raleigh.
On the strength of two home runs by Benji Jackson, a strong pitching performance by Christian Hicks and relief pitching from Dylan Fulk, the Stallions survived a late rally and won 9-7 when Kyle Kiker made a game-ending double play. Fulk, Jackson and Christian Hicks were named to the all-tournament team.
The Stallions started in 2003 with a middle school team and have also played varsity baseball the past three seasons.
Athletics director Tony Kiker manages the team, with Todd Fulk as head coach and Jeff Jackson as assistant. The home field for the Stallions is Webb Field in Concord.

– Prep baseball
Davie County finished its regular season with a 13-0 win over Reynolds Wednesday in five innings.
Zach Russell-Myers pitched a one-hitter. Garrett Benge and Zeb Cope each had three hits and Shelton Howard two for the War Eagles (14-7, 5-5).
The CPC tournament starts today with Davie and Reynolds meeting again at 6 p.m. at Rich Park. The final is Monday at West Forsyth.
– North Davidson defeated West Forsyth 3-1 on Wednesday to capture the Central Piedmont Conference title and No. 1 seed in the tournament.n NCHSAA meeting
The NCHSAA concluded its spring meeting on Wednesday and approved all the proposals made by the Realignment Committee.
– Ledford wins flip
Ledford won the No. 2 seed for the CCC baseball tournament in a coin flip with Central Davidson and plays host to No. 7 Lexington today at 5 p.m.
No. 3 Central plays host to No. 6 East Davidson at 7 p.m. No. 5 North Rowan is at No. 4 West Davidson at 5 p.m.
Salisbury has a first-round bye and will play in a semifinal on Friday at West Davidson’s Feezor Field.
Salisbury, Ledford and Central Davidson enter the tournament even as far as the state playoffs are concerned. Playoff seeds will be determined by how far teams advance in the tournament.
The top two CCC seeds for the playoffs have first-round home games, but the No. 3 seed will be on the road.
– Rockwell Christian
Taylor Honeycutt pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight to lead Rockwell Christian’s baseball team to a 10-0 victory over Fayetteville Street of Asheboro.
Brent Black and Matthew Hoehman had two hits each for the Chargers.
* Rockwell lost to Temple Rockingham 10-9. Black and Jacob Swinson had two hits each.
* Rockwell (5-6) lost 15-2 to Cramerton. David Ketchie had two hits for the Chargers.
* Honeycutt was named to the all-region first team, while Swinson made the second team.
The Chargers play Lexington Union Grove in the playoffs today.
– Prep soccer
Katie Tobias scored Carson’s goal in a 1-1 tie with West Iredell on Wednesday.
* East Rowan lost 4-0 at Statesville in its second-to-last game. The Mustangs play Northwest Cabarrus tonight for senior night.
– Prep softball
Freshman Kim Fesperman hit a home run and a bases-clearing triple for South Rowan in a 9-6 loss to Mooresville on Tuesday.
* Carson lost to Northwest Cabarrus 5-0 on Tuesday but bounced back with a 7-5 victory against Davie County last night.
* West Iredell beat East Rowan 2-0 to knock the Mustangs out of first place in the NPC.
– Gray Stone golf
Gray Stone freshman golfer Chad Blankenbeker was named to All-Rocky Conference team.
Blankenbeker and freshman teammate Andrew Parks also made to the All-Stanly County golf team.
Gray Stone qualified for the 1A Midwest Regional on Monday in Wilkesboro.
– Carson hoops camp
The second annual Cougar Basketball Camp will take place July 14-17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Carson gym.
The camp is for boys and girls who will be in grades second-through-six next school year. All campers will receive T-shirts, and awards will be given for free-throw and hot-shot contests.

– Intimidators fall
The Intimidators gave up a two-run home run to Derrick Mitchell in the first inning and never recovered in a 10-1 loss to Lakewood on Wednesday.
Starting pitcher Nathan Jones lasted only 21/3 innings for the I’s. New addition Luis Sierra, who joined the team Saturday, got his first hits as an Intimidator as he went 2-for-4 with a double.n Junior varsity baseball
West Rowan defeated Lake Norman 11-1 on Wednesday.
Chandler Jones was the winning pitcher for West (13-7, 10-5 NPC), while Hayden Foster had three hits and three RBIs and Jonie Bautista had two hits and scored three runs.
– Averett recruits
Two Davidson County defensive standouts ó Lexington’s Harrison Danze and North Davidson’s Korey Carlton ó will play football for Averett next season.
– College softball
N.C. State’s Blair Harkey went 2-for-3 in a 1-0 loss to Florida State and 1-for-3 with a steal in a 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Seminoles.
The ACC tournament starts May 8 at Maryland.

– Corbin Hills golf
Seven clubs competed in a flighted low-gross, low-net event at Corbin Hills on Tuesday.

Erwin defeated Southeast 161-184 on Wednesday at McCanless.
James Lohr won medalist honors for Erwin, shooting a 38. Conner Lowman shot 40, Jared Devlieger 41 and Jared Hough 42.
Matt Yates led Southeast with a 42 and was followed by Rob Sawyer (46), Garrett Yelton (47) and Chuck Parks (49).
Southeast won the girls match 110-112 and was paced by medalist Savannah Ware with a 54. Stephanie Pyle and Katie Smith shot 56s. Emily Cleveland and Hannah Pressley both shot 56 for Erwin as well.
The Rowan County Middle School Golf Championship will be held Monday at The Club at Irish Creek.
– Little league sign-ups
Sign-ups for East Rowan Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) and Seniors (ages 15-16) Baseball will be at Rowan Power in Granite Quarry until May 10.
Cost is $75, and those who wish to register must bring birth certificate and proof of residency.
These leagues will have interleague games with Rowan and Spencer.
