The track teams from North Rowan and Salisbury have combined for seven top-seeded entries leading up to today’s 2A Midwest Regional at Ledford.
North’s boys have the top three seeds in the 110-meter hurdles and three of the first four in the 300 hurdles. Defending state champion John Bostick is the favorite in both with times of 14.24 and 39.24 seconds this season. Daishion Barger (second seed in the 110 hurdles, third seed in the 300 hurdles) and Rodney Smith (third seed in the 110 hurdles, fourth seed in the 300 hurdles) are also strong in both events. West Caldwell’s Bentley Tyler is seeded second in the 300 hurdles.
North’s Daniel Overcash is the top seed in the shot put (45-8), and teammate Anthony Imes is seeded second in the discus.
Salisbury’s boys have three top seeds: Romar Morris (100 meters, 10.84), Ibn Ali (long jump, 22-1/2) and the 4×200 team of Morris, Ali, A.J. Ford and Robbie Pulliam. Ali is the No. 2 seed in the triple jump behind Monroe’s Isaac Blakeney.
On the girls side, Salisbury has three of the top five seeds in the long jump, with Dasia McGill leading the way at 15-11. Shi-Heria Shipp and Bubbles Phifer are also in the mix.
McGill, Kia Rice and Shipp are seeded second through fourth behind Hibriten’s Brooklyn Chandler in the triple jump.

n Prep baseball
Carson beat Statesville 11-1 in five innings on Senior Night to stay alive for a state playoff berth.
Carson, North Iredell and Lake Norman are tied for sixth heading into Monday’s regular-season finales. The NPC gets six berths.
Senior lefty Cameron Park pitched four hitless innings of relief to spark the Cougars (7-10 NPC).
Seniors Jeremy Mullis, Zack Wright and Zack Bottenfield combined for seven hits. Mullis was 3-for-3.
Scott Ashby and Zack Grkman had two hits each.
“Cam had a lot of movement on the ball tonight, and all our seniors had good nights,” Carson coach Chris Cauble said. “At the plate, we only struck out once and we’ve been striking out a bunch lately. That was the biggest thing.”
n Chris Beaver pitched Mooresville to a 7-5 victory over West Iredell, which made a late charge after Beaver left the mound. John Crucitti had three hits and knocked in four runs for the Blue Devils.
n A.L. Brown (9-13, 7-9) closed its season with a raucous 5-1 SPC victory at Concord that included the ejection of Brown starting pitcher Jacob Wright and a couple of fans.
Wright had his stuff working, all three pitches, including a 90 mph fastball, and dominated the game until controversy erupted in the fourth inning after a Wonder infielder was plowed by a baserunner.
After order was restored, Wright plunked a Spider with a heater and was ejected.
John Tuttle hit an early grand slam for the Wonders. Rashad Jackson banged a run-scoring double.
n Ledford battered Central Davidson 12-2 in a CCC tournament semifinal.
Justin Livengood (6-0) pitched a three-hitter in the five-inning game and went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Ledford scored eight runs in the third inning.
Patrick Koontz hit a three-run homer for the Panthers (18-6), who locked up the CCC’s No. 1 seed for the state playoffs, by virtue of both Central Davidson and Salisbury losing semifinal games.
Ledford takes on host West Davidson for the tournament championship on Monday night. The Green Dragons entered the tournament seeded fourth but can move up to the No. 2 seed for the playoffs by winning the tournament.
Salisbury and Central Davidson will meet in a play-in game on Monday afternoon at West Davidson to determine which team will own a higher seed for the playoffs.
n South grad honored
South Rowan graduate Beth Miller, Senior Associate Athletic Director Olympic Sports at North Carolina, was recently honored with a C. Knox Massey Award to recognize her “unusual, meritorious and superior contributions” to UNC. The award was in the amount of $6,000.
n Prep softball
West Rowan outscored South Rowan 12-7 on Thursday.
Sabrina Stephens had three hits for the Falcons, who are now tied for second in the NPC with Northwest Cabarrus. Brooke Taylor scored four runs, and Alex Mills whacked a pair of doubles.
Stephens relieved in the first inning and was the winning pitcher.
Amber Waldroup pounded a homer and a double for the Raiders. Kayla Morrow also homered. Kim Fesperman, Katie Roberts and Taylor Lookabill had two hits apiece.
n Prep soccer
Salisbury defeated North Rowan 9-0 on Thursday to wrap up its CCC schedule, and the Hornets finished their regular season with a 1-1 tie Friday against private school Providence Day.
Freshman Sierra Davis scored her first career goal against North Rowan, and Jamie Dagenhart scored last night on an assist from Susie Wear. Salisbury scheduled Providence Day, coach Matt Parrish said, to get tested for the playoffs and also to avoid a lengthy layoff. The Hornets won’t play again until a second-round 2A playoff game May 9 or 10.
“We played really, really, really well,” Parrish said. “Emily dean played well, Susie, Ivy (Brisbin). Lindsey Davis played her best game of the season.
“That’s the best team we’ve played. I told the girls regardless of results, we were doing this for a purpose.”
n Carson hoops camp
The second annual Cougar Basketball Camp will take place July 14-17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Carson gym.
The camp is for boys and girls who will be in grades second-through-six next school year. All campers will receive T-shirts, and awards will be given for free-throw and hot-shot contests.

n Little league sign-ups
Sign-ups for East Rowan Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) and Seniors (ages 15-16) Baseball will be at Rowan Power in Granite Quarry until May 10.
Cost is $75, and those who wish to register must bring birth certificate and proof of residency.
These leagues will have interleague games with Rowan and Spencer.
n Kannapolis camp
The Kannapolis Police Department is once again hosting the “Wendy’s Summer Classic” baseball camp.
The camp is held June 23-26 at Northwest Cabarrus and is free.
The focus will be on baseball skills and also making good life decisions.
Baseball coaches include Catawba’s Jim Gantt, Pfeiffer’s Mark Hayes, Northwest’s Joe Hubbard, A.L. Brown’s Empsy Thompson, Robinson’s Jason Sarvis and China Grove’s Joe Gragg.
The camp is open to the first 100 players . Players must register at the Kannapolis Police Department.
n Dole: race director
Elizabeth Dole has been named honorary race director of the Coca-Cola 600 to be held at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on May 25. She will attend the pre-race drivers meeting, preside over pre-race ceremonies and visit the control tower during the event.
Speedway officials also announced Richard Thompson, speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates, will serve as the honorary starter.
n Lacrosse camp
GameBreaker Lacrosse Camps are coming to Salisbury this summer. The camps are open to boys ages 8-18, and players are grouped by age. Camps will be held at Catawba from July 17-20. The camp will be directed by Catawba coach Peter Bourque.

n Summer Shootout
The Jagged Events Summer Shootout is scheduled for June 21-22 in Salisbury. The fee is $150 for boys and girls ages 9-14. All teams invited: AAU, USSSA, YBOA, USBA and schools. Call 336-231-3586. The event will also be in Mocksville on June 28 for ages 10-11.
The fee is $200.
n Tennis camps
Catawba will hold tennis clinics Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays this month from 3:30-5 p.m.
Dates are set for summer camps, as well, with camps running June 16-19, July 7-10, July 21-24, July 28-31 and Aug. 4-7.

Pfeiffer’s men’s golf team is one of eighty that has been selected to participate in the Division II super regionals.
n Middle school soccer
West Rowan Middle’s girls defeated Sacred Heart 3-2. Toni Lucente and Rachel Brown scored the goals for the Bulldogs (7-1).
n Dinkin Miller scored both goals for West in a 4-2 loss to Sacred Heart.
