North Rowan picked up its fourth victory of the season by pulling out a 6-5 victory against Salisbury with a seventh-inning rally Thursday.
Lindsay Thompson knocked in the tying run for the Cavaliers before Kat Robbins drove in the game-winner.
* East Rowan (13-2) plays host to Northwest Cabarrus (14-2) today in a matchup that will decide first place in the NPC.
East finishes with a doubleheader against last-place Statesville, and Northwest has a game left with Lake Norman on Monday.
– College baseball
Appalachian State’s Garrett Sherrill (A.L. Brown) struck out the side in the ninth to close out a 9-3 victory over Elon on Thursday. The Mountaineers won the nightcap 26-10.
– Intimidators win
The Kannapolis Intimidators broke a sixth-inning tie on Dale Mollenhauer’s RBI double and took a 6-3 victory at Lakewood. Jason Rice pitched five innings, allowed three runs and got the win.
– East soccer
East Rowan’s soccer team closed out its season with a strong effort in a 4-1 NPC loss against Northwest Cabarrus on Thursday. Hannah Wilson scored a goal for the seventh-place Mustangs, and four seniors ended their careers.
Colleen Cowie made 23 saves before being taken out with three minutes left to a standing ovation. Rutgers commitment Callie Simpkins had a goal and an assist for Northwest.
“It was 1-1 in the second half, and we played very well against a better team,” East coach Eduel Atkins said. “We finished on a real high note.”
– Middle school baseball
Erwin defeated Southeast 12-1 on Thursday for its eighth win in nine outings. Curtis Ward pitched a three-hitter.
Ward, Chase Hathcock, Gavin Wike, Bradley Robbins and Jared Mathis had two hits each for the Eagles. Andy Austin had a double for the Patriots.
Erwin plays Knox on Monday.
* China Grove beat Corriher-Lipe 7-0 behind Mitch Galloway’s three-hitter. Galloway struck out 12.Bobby Richards had three hits for the Red Devils (6-2). Eric Tyler and Josh Martin had two each.
* Earlier, China Grove downed North Rowan Middle 4-2. Ben Gragg pitched five strong innings, with Galloway picking up a win in relief.Chase Dehart had two hits for the Red Devils.
– CPC baseball
Clint Howell pitched a one-hitter to lead fourth-seeded Davie County to an 11-0, five-inning victory against No. 5 seed R.J. Reynolds in the first round of the CPC tournament.
Zeb Cope had three hits for the War Eagles, while Jess Cartner had two.
Davie wrapped up a spot in the state playoffs with the win. It plays top-seeded North Davidson in a semifinal at West Forsyth tonight at 7 p.m.
* Third-seeded Mount Tabor beat No. 6 seed North Forsyth 8-0 in the other first-round game and plays a semifinal against second-seeded West Forsyth today at 5 p.m. in Clemmons.
– CCC baseball
Ledford beat seventh-seeded Lexington 9-3 in a first-round CCC tournament game Thursday and advanced to a semifinal meeting with Central Davidson at West Davidson tonight at 7 p.m.
Travis Vogler pitched for the second-seeded Panthers (18-6). Sam Berrier went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Ricky Vaughn scored three runs and Patrick Koontz went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple.
* Chaz Frank pitched a one-hitter, struck out 11 and went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead third-seeded Central Davidson to a 9-0 victory against sixth-seeded East Davidson.
Trevor Leonard hit a two-run homer for the Spartans.
– Catawba still third
Catawba’s baseball team is still ranked third in the South Region poll.
Second-ranked Tusculum has secured one of six automatic berths in the regional field. Stillman qualified by winning the SIAC tournament.
Regular-season play continues in the Sunshine Conference, and the champion will earn an automatic berth. Catawba is likely to receive one of three at-large berths.
Carson-Newman is ranked fourth in the region. Tampa is No. 1, with fellow Sunshine Conference teams Florida Tech and Lynn holding down the fifth and sixth spots in the rankings.
– Minor league update
Beloit’s Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) notched his first save of the season as the Snappers notched a 4-2 victory over South Bend on Wednesday.Steedley worked 12/3 innings. He allowed one run and struck out one. His ERA is 2.08.
* New Britain’s Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) lowered his ERA to 0.54 with two scoreless innings in an 11-2 romp over Binghamton on Wednesday.
– SAC hires Britz
The South Atlantic Conference announced the hiring of Patrick Britz as its new commissioner. Britz served as the Division I programs director for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America the past three years.
– Pfeiffer golf
Pfeiffer’s Brittany Beltran, the Conference Carolinas Player of the Yar, will compete as an individual in the D-II women’s golf championships.
– Hole-in-one
Local golfer Jack Seybold made a hole-in-one last week at the Lexington Municipal Golf Course.
Seybold aced the 127-yard No. 3 hole.
The shot was witnessed by: Pete Warfford, Terry Love and Matt Seavey.
– Gray Stone golf
Gray Stone freshman golfer Chad Blankenbeker was named to All-Rocky River Conference team. Blankenbeker and freshman teammate Andrew Parks also made to the All-Stanly County team.
Gray Stone qualified for the 1A Midwest Regional on Monday in Wilkesboro.
– Carson hoops camp
The second annual Cougar Basketball Camp will take place July 14-17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Carson gym.
The camp is for boys and girls who will be in grades second-through-six next school year. All campers will receive T-shirts, and awards will be given for free-throw and hot-shot contests.

– Little league sign-ups
Sign-ups for East Rowan Little League Juniors (ages 13-14) and Seniors (ages 15-16) Baseball will be at Rowan Power in Granite Quarry until May 10.
Cost is $75, and those who wish to register must bring birth certificate and proof of residency.
These leagues will have interleague games with Rowan and Spencer.
– Kannapolis camp
The Kannapolis Police Department is once again hosting the “Wendy’s Summer Classic” baseball camp.
The camp is held June 23-26 at Northwest Cabarrus and is free.
The focus will be on baseball skills and also making good life decisions.
Baseball coaches include Catawba’s Jim Gantt, Pfeiffer’s Mark Hayes, Northwest’s Joe Hubbard, A.L. Brown’s Empsy Thompson, Robinson’s Jason Sarvis and China Grove’s Joe Gragg.
The camp is open to the first 100 players . Players must register at the Kannapolis Police Department.
– Dole: race director
Elizabeth Dole has been named honorary race director of the Coca-Cola 600 to be held at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on May 25. She will attend the pre-race drivers meeting, preside over pre-race ceremonies and visit the control tower during the event.
Speedway officials also announced Richard Thompson, speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates, will serve as the honorary starter.
– Lacrosse camp
GameBreaker Lacrosse Camps are coming to Salisbury this summer. The camps are open to boys ages 8-18, and players are grouped by age. Camps will be held at Catawba from July 17-20. The camp will be directed by Catawba coach Peter Bourque.

– Summer Shootout
The Jagged Events Summer Shootout is scheduled for June 21-22 in Salisbury. The fee is $150 for boys and girls ages 9-14. All teams invited: AAU, USSSA, YBOA, USBA and schools. Call 336-231-3586. The event will also be in Mocksville on June 28 for ages 10-11.
The fee is $200.
– Tennis camps
Catawba will hold tennis clinics Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays this month from 3:30-5 p.m.
Dates are set for summer camps, as well, with camps running June 16-19, July 7-10, July 21-24, July 28-31 and Aug. 4-7.

Pfeiffer’s men’s golf team is one of eighty that has been selected to participate in the Division II super regionals.
– Middle school soccer
West Rowan Middle’s girls defeated Sacred Heart 3-2. Toni Lucente and Rachel Brown scored the goals for the Bulldogs (7-1).
– Dinkin Miller scored both goals for West in a 4-2 loss to Sacred Heart.
