Area Sports Briefs: Catawba game suspended

SALISBURY — The South Atlantic Conference baseball game between Catawba and Wingate was suspended by Friday night’s rain at Newman Park.
Catawba leads, 3-0, after four complete innings. The game was halted at 7:02 p.m., with Wingate about to bat in the top of the fifth inning.
Catawba, 16-7 overall, leads the SAC with a 7-2 mark. Wingate is 13-12 and 4-2.
Catawba ace Russ Weiker started on the mound and had hurled four innings of one-hit baseball. Weiker struck out six Bulldogs and walked just one.
The Indians grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run double off the bat of Zac Almond.
In the fourth inning after one out, Nick Coble blasted a home run to push the Catawba lead to 3-0.
Weather permitting, the game will resume at 3 p.m. today, followed by a seven-inning game. The third game of the weekend series will now be played on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Newman Park.
Prep baseball
North Rowan won three games in two days.
In a 6-4 win against Gray Stone on Thursday, Jordan Goodine got the mound win.
Henderson Lentz had a triple and two RBIs. Corbin Smith had two RBIs. Mark Parra had two hits.
In a 12-6 win against Gray Stone on Thursday, Smith pitched five strong innings and struck out five.
Lentz had a double and a homer and drove in three runs. Parra went 3-for-4.

In North’s 14-0 win against Albemarle on Friday, Joe Harrison fanned 11.
Lentz, Smith and Steven Thurston had three hits each.

West Rowan smashed Central Cabarrus, 18-0, in a five-inning SPC romp on Friday.
Daniel Durham pitched a shutout.
Mykal Berger, Brett Graham and Brett Walton had two hits each.
Olen Stamper drove in three runs, whle Austin Love and Logan Sproul knocked in two each.

East Rowan romped to a 12-1 SPC victory against Northwest Cabarrus on Friday, with Hayden Setzer throwing four strong innings.
Avery Shull had three hits for the Mustangs, while Chandler Blackwelder had two.

In other SPC contests, Hickory Ridge cruised against Robinson, 11-1, and Cox Mill beat Concord, 8-3.

South Rowan’s game at Carson was washed out and rescheduled for today at 4 p.m. — varsity only.

A.L. Brown won against North Meck, 5-4, on Lane Argrabright’s walk-off hit that scored Dylan Shubert.
Robby Clarke drove in four runs.
Lane Argrabright, Matt Shubert and Matt Baucom got the job done on the mound for the Wonders.
Prep softball
West Rowan rolled at Central Cabarrus, 10-0, on Friday, handing the Vikings their first loss in the SPC.
Hannah Roberts pitched a shutout for the Falcons, holding Central to four hits. Second baseman Alexandra Linder and third baseman Camryn Nooner keyed the defense.
Mary Sobataka had two hits. Morgan Corriher, Ava Link and and Parker Greene drove in runs.
Greene and Link scored three runs each.

East Rowan got another win in the SPC by beating Northwest Cabarrus, 12-5, on Friday.
Coryn Soul had four hits, including a homer, for the Mustangs.
Bree Medlin also had four hits.
The winning pitcher was Karley Teague.

Ashlynn Stokes had a walk-off hit in A.L. Brown’s 2-1 MECKA win against Hough on Friday.
Stokes was the winning pitcher and struck out four.
Allie Baker, Catawba signee, drove in a run. Lauren Ritchie had three hits.

In SPC games, Cox Mill beat Concord, 9-4, and Hickory Ridge romped against Robinson, 11-0.
Women’s basketball
Morehead State’s Shay Steele (West Rowan) was the second player in program history to reach 1,200 points, 600 rebounds and 175 blocks in her career.
Prep tennis
Carson took a 5-4 win against A.L. Brown on Thursday in a non-conference match.
Lucas Sides, Jared Henriquez and Jacob Horner won singles matches for the Cougars. Sides/Hunter Smith and Henriquez/Jesus Barron won in doubles.

Salisbury beat South Rowan on Friday, 9-0.
Winning for the Hornets in singles were Ethan McGee, Roarke Burton, Jander Rodas, Sean Archer, Adam Drye and Keegan Dillon.
Winning doubles teams were McGee/Rodas, Drye/Burton and Dillon/Archer.
Salisbury will play at East Davidson on Monday.
