Area Sports Briefs: CIAA Southern Division tournament at Warrior

Livingstone will host the  CIAA Southern Division Tournament today and Tuesday at Warrior Golf Club. Eight schools from the conference will be participating in the event.

Prep basketball

Robinson’s Lavar Batts Jr., the MVP, had 16 points and six assists as the North Carolina All-Stars beat South Carolina, 134-115, in Myrtle Beach.

Shelby’s Aubrey Hollifield coached the N.C. team.

North Carolina’s girls romped, 95-67. Clinton’s Mikayla Boykin scored 15 and was named MVP.

Prep baseball

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions defeated Providence Grove on Saturday, 12-1.  The Stallions were led by Dalton Lankford with three hits and Seth Cauble with two hits.

Camron Wallace and Weston Cregger had doubles.  Cauble was the winning pitcher.

The Stallions (10-2) will play at South Stanly at 6 p.m. tonight.   

College baseball

Matt Vernon (Davie County) homered and Brian Bauk (Salisbury) had a two-run single as Appalachian State beat LSU 12-4 on Saturday.

  

College track

Western Carolina freshman Devaniel Dale (East Rowan) was strong in a spring track kickoff meet at High Point University on Saturday.

Dale was second in the 400 (48.84), fifth in the 200 (21.88) and helped the 4×400 team finish second.

Western’s Jordan Bostian (West Rowan) won the 3000-meter steeplechase  10:06.

Western’s Josh Little (East Rowan) helped the 4×100 team take third place.

  UNC Pembroke’s Jonathan Martin and Matthew Martin (Carson) competed in the 10,000 meter run on Friday   at the Trojan Challenge at the University of  Mount Olive.

Matthew placed second in 32:53. Jonathan was third in 32:54.

College hoops

The Davidson County Community College Storm finished seventh with a  107-97 win in the national tournament in Minnesota against Brookdale (N.J.). All-tournament Brandon Rothrock had 26 points for the Storm (30-5).

  

College lacrosse

Liam Lynch scored five goals as Catawba’s men beat Mars Hill, 14-5, on Saturday at Shuford Stadium.

   Catawba’s women won for the fifth straight time, topping Edinboro, 10-8, at Shuford Stadium.

Catawba (7-2) got three goals from  Kirstyn Kruse.

Local golf

In the 12th Annual St. Patty’s Member Appreciation Day Tournament at McCanless, the team of Jeff Patterson/Jared Hinson won low gross with a 74.

Frankie Cardelle/Scott Perry took second with a 76. Adam Horton/Jacob Durham took third, also with a 76.

The team of Sharon Miller/Susan Houston won low net with a 61. Also at 61, were Gene Seaford/Mary Seaford (second) and Joe Ford/Rupert Bell (third).

Colby Patterson won longest putt on No. 3. Mike Hardister won longest drive on No. 18.

The format was modified alternate shot.
