The start of Central Carolina Conference play meant a fresh start for North Rowan’s baseball  team on Monday, and the Cavaliers responded with a 10-0 win at Lexington.

North (6-5) ended a three-game losing skid.

Senior Joe Harrison, a Belmont Abbey commit, nearly pitched a no-hitter in the five-inning game. Lexington got its first hit to start the fifth.

“Joe got behind 3-and-0, the guy fouled a pitch off, and then he got a hit,” North coach Tommy Small said. “But then Joe picked him off first base.”

Harrison (2-3) struck out eight.

Lexington’s Will Lancaster pitched well for a while, but the Cavaliers got to him for a big fourth inning to blow the game open.

“He was tough, but we got his pitch count up and we hit him pretty hard in the fourth,” Small said.

Jordan Goodine had a double and drove in three runs. Henderson Lentz and McGwire Smith knocked in two apiece.

“We’ve got Goodine, a freshman, in the 4-hole, and he’s coming through with big hits,” Small said.

The teams will play again tonight at North Rowan. Like just about everyone else, the Cavaliers have moved their game up, trying to beat expected rain on Friday. First pitch will be at 7 p.m.

Carson baseball

Carson stayed on top in the South Piedmont Conference by edging Central Cabarrus at home, 1-0.

Ben Shoaf knocked in the game’s only run in the first inning, and Cameron Prugh made that slim lead stand up.

Prugh (1-0) pitched a complete game. He struck out seven, walked two and scattered six hits.

Central hurler Joe Muhonen held Carson to three hits. Shoaf had two and Logan Ridenhour had one.

Carson has a one-game lead over South Rowan, East Rowan and West Rowan and will host the Mustangs tonight in a game moved up from Friday.

South baseball

Dawson Larrimore and Anthony Fox drove in runs as South Rowan edged Northwest Cabarrus, 2-1, in Wednesday’s South Piedmont Conference action.

Tyler Shepherd pitched a complete game for South. He struck out seven, walked one and allowed three hits.

Blake Sinclair pitched into the seventh for the Trojans and held South to four hits.

South will play tonight against Concord in another game that’s been moved up 24 hours.

Prep softball

West Rowan rallied to win a wild South Piedmont Conference game against Robinson, 7-6.

Robinson scored three runs in the top of the seventh for a 6-4 lead. Then West answered with three in the bottom half.

Parker Greene had the game-tying hit. Mary Sobataka had the walk-off single.

Ava Link went 3-for-3 with two doubles.  Hannah Pratt went 2-for-3 with her first career homer and two RBIs.

Sobataka and Greene drove in two runs each, Tori Hester had two hits.

Madison Crowe had three hits and four RBIs for the Bulldogs. Devon Lemasters struck out six.

Brooke Lowery had three hits and two RBIs for South Rowan in Wednesday’s 13-3 win against Northwest Cabarrus.

Whitley Arnott drove in three runs. Anna Blume knocked in two.

Jalee Rollins pitched a complete game.

Phoebe Florian and Bailey Wilher had three hits each for NWC.

East Rowan lost to Cox Mill, 4-1, in SPC action on  Wednesday. East had eight hits, with Caroline Johnson and Victoria Lewis getting two each.

Carson won 6-5 against Central Cabarrus in a Wednesday SPC game.

The Cougars took a 6-2 lead and held on. Madison Barnhardt had three hits. Katie Jewell drove in two runs. Rylie Stewart pitched a complete game and struck out four.

Prep girls soccer

South Rowan lost to Northwest Cabarrus, 3-2, on Wednesday in South Piedmont Conference action.  Rhiannon Kimmer scored both South goals on assists by Madison Henry.

West Rowan lost to Robinson, 10-1, on Wednesday.

Lejla Mehmedovic scored for the Falcons.

Lauren Rector had four  goals to lead the Bulldogs.

Cox Mill won against East Rowan, 9-0, while Central Cabarrus edged Carson, 1-0.

Prep boys tennis

Salisbury beat West Davidson, 8-1, on Wednesday to stay unbeaten in the Central Carolina Conference.

Winning for the Hornets in singles were Jadas Rodas, Roarke Burton,  Sean Archer, Adam Drye and Paul Wietz.

Winning in doubles  were  William McGee/Rodas, Drye/Burton and Wietz/Archer.

Salisbury plays at Lexington today.

Prep boys golf

East Rowan shot 146 and won a South Piedmont Conference match played on Wednesday at Crescent.

South Rowan shot 148 for second. Concord (159), Carson (163) and Hickory Ridge (163) rounded out the top five.

East Rowan’s Nick Lyerly and Concord’s Stephen Carroll were co-medalists with 34s.

Other East scores were Bryson Sprinkle (37), Austin Miller (37), Alex Miller (38) and Will Garland (39).

South’s top scores were Parker Chavis (36), Landon Johnson (36), Andrew Coward (37) and Andrew Hubbard (39).

Patrick Street (35) and Zain Tucker (37) led Carson.

Davis Tadlock shot 40 to lead host West Rowan

Men’s lacrosse

Catawba claimed an 11-10 win over visiting Coker in South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Shuford Stadium.

Cole Fanzo  and Liam Lynch  scored three goals each  for Catawba (6-5, 3-2).

Catawba softball

Coker swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from   Catawba on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field.

The Cobras won by the scores of 3-0 and 6-4 to improve to 28-10 overall and 6-2 in the SAC.

The Catawba Indians dropped to 9-28 and 2-6.

Caroline Turner, Kristen Stinnard and Grace Holland had two hits for Catawba in Game 2. Taylor Martin had a hit in both games.

Catawba will host Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at 1 p.m.

College tennis

Queens swept Catawba in a doubleheader at Freedom Park

The Queens men won 9-0.

The Queens women rolled 8-1.

an 8-1 victory. Catawba men are now 11-11 and 4-6 with the women falling to 11-10 and 2-8.

The Catawba women are scheduled to travel to Winston-Salem State on Friday for a 2 p.m. match. The men return to action on April 6 with a 2 p.m. match at Belmont Abbey.
