College softball: Catawba splits with LMU

Catawba’s softball team split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.
Catawba (10-29, 3-7) won the opener, 2-1, when Ashley Wagoner’s walk-off double scored pinch-runner Beth Ann Martin from second base. Brooke Walser pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits and striking out four.
LMU had a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh, but on Jennifer Moose’s two-out single to left, Taylor Martin threw out pinch-runner Kristen McAndrews Allie Jones at the plate.
In the second game, LMU retaliated with a 2-1 win of its own. Grace Holland knocked in Catawba’s only run in the third inning. LMU (20-15, 3-7) took control with a two-run fourth that knocked out Catawba starter Kaylee Cook.
