Horizons Unlimited will be hosting a North Carolina Science Festival event on Saturday, April 8 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Join us for “A Magical Celebration” which includes potions class, story time in Setzer School, quidditch practice on the back lawn, Harry Potter Trivia, a visit from the Rowan-Public Library’s Bookmobile, a brand new Harry Potter star talk in the Margaret C. First Friday Night Out Downtown
Downtown Salisbury’s First Friday Night Out is 5-9 p.m. April 7: Hop Around Town at the Spring Showcase with Easter activities. Also at Friday Night Out, meet 14-year-old Virginia Moye Robertson of Salisbury, the first featured entrepreneur in Caniche’s new “Featured Entrepreneur Endeavor.” Virginia is the creator of handmade, jewelry she calls Mermaid Pearls. Auditions for ‘Big Fish’ at Lee Street theatre
Auditions for Lee Street theatre’s “Big Fish” are April 9-10 from 7-9 p.m., a heartfelt, and magical musical about fathers, sons, and the stories that we use to define our identities. Prepare a 16-bar song selection for your audition. The production will be directed by Craig Kolkebeck, with music direction by Adrian Smith and choreography by Mavis Scully. RCCC student art & design exhibition opens Friday at ClearWater Gallery
CONCORD — ClearWater Artist Studios together with the Department of Fine & Applied Arts at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, announce the annual RCCC Student Art & Design Exhibition, “Impulse,” to be showcased in ClearWater’s Main Gallery. The opening reception is April 7 from 5-7 p.m., and is free and open to the public. Student artists and RCCC gaculty will be present. Refreshments will be served. The Impulse Student Art Show will be on exhibit through April 27.
Rowan History Club presents ‘Land of My Ancestors: Art in History’
The Rowan History Club will meet Tuesday, April 11 at 7 pm. The program will be presented by local artist Robert Alvin Crum about his work “Return to the Land of My Ancestors.” A descendant of Daniel Boone and the Bryan families of early Rowan County, Mr. Crum was born in Illinois and heard stories of his ancestors from early days. Upon moving to North Carolina in 1989, he discovered he was walking in some of the same places as those Boone and Bryan ancestors. Inspired by this, Crum has extensively researched and created a series of oil and water color paintings that tell the story of cultural conflict in the 18th century North Carolina backcountry. This conflict led to America’s initial expansion into Kentucky and beyond.
A roundtable format will allow for a 30-45 minute presentation, followed by a question and answer period. The Rowan History Club is open to anyone interested in the history of Rowan County. AAUW Outlook Readers host a discussion with author Susan King on Tuesday, April 11 at 10:30 a.m. in the Card Room at Trinity Oaks Retirement Center, 728 Klumac Road.
In April 2014, Susan King released the book, “Optimism for Autism: The Inspiring Journey of a Mother and her Autistic Son,” which she co-authored with her son Patrick.
