Touch A Truck was unforgettable
Touch A Truck was held at the Mahaley Avenue Food Lion on April 19. Folks who did not go missed a great time to have with any child of any age.
I took my fiancee’s 5-year-old grandson Mark so that he could touch a truck, sit in them behind the steering wheel, honk the horn, pull the air horns, climb all over a fire truck, try on a helmet, boots, pants, turn on sirens, the red and blue lights for a fire truck, ambulance and police car.
It was like a dream come true for Mark. The people involved with this project answered all the children’s questions about how something worked.
I know that some of these ladies and gentlemen had other things to do, but they took their personal time to help the children up, down, over, under, around and through all of the vehicles involved. People with cameras were snapping pictures of children who might not get a chance to see these vehicles except on the street somewhere. I saw truck drivers and officers kneel down to talk with children and lift children up and down until their arms ached, but the smiles on all the kids faces said thank you.
These trucks had to be as clean as if they had just come from a car wash, and these employees probably took time to clean and shine them for the event.
To all who helped with any part of this event, let me give you a very special thank you for making a 5-year-old boy’s Saturday one he won’t forget for a very long time. We have 60 pictures to put together in a scrapbook for him to have to keep looking at the pictures of all the trucks and vehicles that were present.

Please vote for Donna Peeler for Rowan County commissioner. Donna has spent most of her life in politics, starting at an early age when she and Phil Kirk started the first Teen Age Republican Club in Rowan County.
She has held numerous positions in the state and national Republican Women’s Club and in our local and state Republican party. Her roots are in Rowan County, and she will work to preserve our rural way of life but at the same time promote jobs and education.
