East Rowan’s baseball team had lost a marathon with West Rowan early in the season.

On Tuesday, the Mustangs got some payback. They beat West, 4-2, in nine  innings in Mount Ulla.

John Owen pitched eight innings for the win and struck out 10.

Nathan Hill and Bryson Wagner had key RBIs for the Mustangs. Chandler Blackwelder had three hits. Matthew Mathis had two.

Daniel Durham and Pearce Wilhelm did the hurling for West. Olen Stamper had two hits for West.

East scored two in the first but didn’t score again until the ninth. West got two runs in the second.

East out-hit the Falcons,  9-4. East and West are tied for first with 11-4 league records.

South Rowan scored seven runs in the third inning and went on to beat Central Cabarrus, 7-2, in SPC action on Tuesday.

South out-hit the Vikings, 7-3.

Dillon Norton pitched four innings with four strikeouts. Tyler Belk was excellent in relief.

Tyler Shepherd paced the Raiders’ offense with two RBIs. Chandler Norton had two hits.

Carson shelled Concord, 16-5, on Tuesday in a five-inning SPC contest.

Carson had 16 hits. The Cougars scored eight runs in the first inning and added six in the third.

Owen White, Logan Rogers and Logan Ridenhour had three RBIs each.

Maddux Holshouser struck out six and got the win.

Bo Rusher drove in three runs as Salisbury routed Thomasville, 17-3, for a Central Carolina Conference win on Tuesday.

Blaine Shellhorn had three hits for the Hornets, Hut Smith and Jack Fisher had two hits each.

Salisbury used a committee of pitchers, including Rusher and Will Taylor.

In North Rowan’s 3-1 Central Carolina Conference loss at East Davidson on Monday, Joe Harrison struck out eight and allowed one earned run. Gavin Kuld drove in the lone run for the Cavaliers (6-9, 1-3 CCC).

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions split a doubleheader in the Copperhead classic at McCrary Park on Monday.

The Stallions lost to Southwest Randolph, 6-3, but beat Asheboro, 3-1.

Against SW Randolph, AJ Knight had two hits, including a two-run homer.   

In the Asheboro game,  Thaddaeus Lankford had two hits. Seth Cauble was the winning pitcher, with Trent Berry getting the save.

The Stallions (18-6) will play in East Rowan’s Easter Tournament. The Stallions will play the Charlotte Stampede at 4 p.m. in the first round on Saturday.

Prep softball

West Rowan beat East Rowan in South Piedmont Conference, softball, 8-1, on Tuesday.

Hannah Roberts was the winning pitcher.

Parker Greene had a three hits, including a triple. Roberts, Mary Sobataka, Hannah Pratt and Alexandra Linder had two hits each for the Falcons.

Carson won two games on Tuesday, beating Concord 8-4 in SPC action and topping A.L. Brown, 4-1.

Prep girls soccer

Carson won against Concord, 4-2, on Tuesday in South Piedmont Conference play.

Gracie Thomason scored two goals. Sarah Musselwhite and Hannah Smith had one each.

East Rowan got its first win of the season by beating West Rowan, 2-1, in overtime. Lejla Mehmedovic scored for the Falcons.

South Rowan lost to Central Cabarrus, 5-2.

Madison Henry and Mary Jester scored for the Raiders. Leslie Sanchez had a strong performance.

Salisbury improved to 12-1-1 overall and 5-0 in the Central Carolina Conference with a 9-0 win against North Rowan on Tuesday.

Salisbury got goals from frequent scorers Ceci Cardelle and Julia Honeycutt.  Maria Capito, Anna Grace Woolly, Rainey Dunham and Bess Bryan also had goals.

Scoring for the first time this season was Giselle Nieto. Sophomore Lila Harry scored her first career goal, as did freshman Emily Keener.

All the Hornets have scored this season.

Tallying assists for the Hornets were Katie Bullock (3), Honeycutt (2), Cardelle (2), and Bethanie Stauffer.

Emily Mann secured her second consecutive shutout in goal for Salisbury.

“After the debacle that was the Thomasville match, it was nice to see girls get back on the right track tonight,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “I was especially pleased with our unselfishness, teamwork, and commitment to hard work. Sometimes it is easier to score goals than to get all of your teammates involved.  The work of Cardelle, Bullock, and Honeycutt epitomizes my idea of what it means to be a team. Each gave up numerous opportunities to give teammates a chance to score, and they did so without thought or complaint.”

Next  for the Hornets is a week off.

Prep tennis

Salisbury  beat North Rowan, 9-0.

Winning for the Hornets in singles  were  Ethan McGee, Roarke Burton, Jander Rodas, Sean Archer, Adam Drye and Paul Wietz.

Winning in doubles were Drye/Burton, McGee/Wietz and Rodas/Archer.

Salisbury (13-1, 9-0 CCC) plays its  last regular season match on Wednesday at home against Thomasville at 4:30 p.m.

  

College baseball

Catawba’s Luke Setzer (East Rowan) is the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Thomas St. Clair of Lenoir-Rhyne is the SAC Pitcher of the Week.

Setzer hit .611 with 11 hits and four RBIs to lead the Catawba Indians to a 3-1 record last week. The honor is his third of the season for Setzer.

CIAA men’s golf

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association  will host its Golf Championships in Glen Allen, Va., on Thursday and Friday.

Eight teams, including Livingstone, will compete at  The Crossings.

SAC women’s golf

Catawba put together rounds of 322, 316 and 321 to post a ninth-place finish at the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Golf Championships. The three-day Championships concluded on Tuesday at the 5,910-yard, par-72 Link Hills Country Club.

Madison Moore led Catawba as she finished 32nd with a 237 total of the three rounds. She scored three birdies in her final round which came at the par-4 12th and 13th and the par-4 first.

Lenoir-Rhyne rallied past Tusculum, which led after the first two rounds, to win the title. The Bears shot a 304 on Tuesday to finish at 908, three shots better than the Pioneers.

Carson-Newman’s Elizabeth England followed up her 66 with a 75 on Tuesday, but her 214 total was one shot better than Abbey Hartsell, of Lenoir-Rhyne, who had a final-round 74.

College softball

Pfeiffer’s Makenzie Pennell was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week.

The freshman  batted .600 with three home runs, five RBIs and four runs scored. She broke the Pfeiffer single-season RBIs record (49) and is second all-time in single-season homers with 10.

College tennis

  Lenoir-Rhyne knocked off Catawba 5-4 in men’s and women’s South Atlantic Conference tennis action on Tuesday at Hickory High.

Mid. school soccer

Erwin’s girls soccer team beat Knox, 4-0,  and defeated West Rowan, 8-0.  Carleigh Perry, Lani Isley, Hannah Isley, Riley Isley, Alix Vasquez, Leah Hinceman and Morgan Hoffman scored goals.  Lydia Miller, Sofie Graham and Lani Isley combined for the shutouts.

Erwin’s boys defeated West Rowan, 6-1.  Goals were scored by:  Drew Roane, Johnny Chavisand Hunter Honeycutt.  Caleb Wagoner recorded the win in goal.

Mid. school tennis

Erwin Middle defeated West Rowan, 8-1  at West  on Tuesday.

Intimidators fall

Chris Comito tossed six strong innings in his season debut, but the Intimidators could not overcome four errors in a 2-1 loss to the Rome Braves on Tuesday at Intimidators Stadium.

Kannapolis (1-5) tied the game in the sixth inning before the Braves pulled in front with a run in the eighth.   

Local golf

Seventy-two GARS members played an ABCD golf tournament at Rolling Hills.

‘A’ Flight winner was Gordon Correll with a net of 64.99.

‘B’ Flight winner was Bob Sidden with a net of 58.65.

‘C’ Flight winner was Lynn Shook with a net of 61.24.

‘D’ Flight winner was John Daniels with a net of 66.81.

Ken Miller had an eagle 2 on the par-4 196-yard No. 13 hol. Frank Masingo had a hole-in-one on the same hole.  He was playing with Tom Dodge, Windsor Eagle and Paul Rogers.
