Hayden Wilson had a three-run homer and a two-run single as South Rowan held off Hickory Ridge in South Piedmont Conference baseball, 15-12, on Thursday.

Starter Walker Joyce got the win, exiting in the sixth inning. Tyler Belk and Tyler Shepherd pitched out of the bullpen.

Joyce had three of South’s nine hits. Austin Chrismon and Dawson Larrimore had two-run singles.

Dillon Norton made two fine catches in right field.

South opens up the F&M Bank Classic at Intimidators Stadium today at 11 a.m. against a strong Lake Norman club.

West Rowan  got a great start from Payne Stolsworth and beat Concord, 4-0, for a South Piedmont Conference win.

Stolsworth pitched six shutout innings and struck out four. He allowed two hits. Austin Love pitched the  seventh and fanned two Spiders.

Brandon Walton and Trevor Atwood drove in runs. Pearce Wilhelm had two hits. The Falcons are back into first place in the SPC with a 12-4 league mark.

East Rowan let one slip away on Thursday on the road, falling at SPC foe Robinson, 5-4.

Colby Myrick pitched a  great game for East and took a 4-1 lead to the bottom of the seventh.

Two errors and two  clutch hits helped the Bulldogs pull off a season sweep of East.

The loss knocked East out of a tie for first.

East’s Easter Tournament, which also includes West Rowan, starts on Saturday at Staton Field.

Cameron Kepley pitched Central Cabarrus to a 6-2 SPC win against Cox Mill on Thursday.

Jacob Allred, Gavin Canipe and Jake Rowden had two hits each for the Vikings.

Davis Hurd had two hits for Cox Mill.

Prep girls soccer

Madison Henry scored two goals for South Rowan on Thursday in a 5-2 loss to second-place Hickory Ridge.

Prep softball

West Rowan (13-3) shelled Concord in a Thursday doubleheader and moved into second place in the South Piedmont Conference.

The Falcons won 11-1 and 15-6.

In the 11-1 win, Alexandra Linder had a double, a triple and a home run to back the pitching of Hannah Roberts. Morgan Corriher went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Mary Sobataka had two hits.

In the 15-6 romp, Tori Hester was the winning pitcher. Sobataka had four hits and two RBIs. Corriher went 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Linder had two RBIs. Parker Greene homered. Ava Link, Khara Fesperman and Timber Hedrick had two  hits each.

Olivia Boger struck out 15 batters and pitched a two-hitter in Davie County’s 1-0 win against Central Davidson on Thursday.

Jessica Beck drove in the only run.

Karley Teague pitched East Rowan to a 2-1 win against Robinson that went eight innings.

Caroline Johnson and Lauren Coughenour had two hits each for the Mustangs.

Lindsey Powell pitched a three-inning perfect game as first-place Hickory Ridge beat South Rowan, 18-0.

Women’s golf

The University of Richmond women’s golf team competed in the Hoya Invitational.

Isabella Rusher (Salisbury) shot 77-79-81 and finished 21-over. She tied for 43rd.

UNC Pembroke’s Alexandria Bare (South) Rowan) was named to the  Peach Belt Conference  All-Academic  team.

Bare holds a 3.47 GPA while majoring in business administration.

On the course, she maintains a 79.0 stroke average and has seen action in seven events and 16 rounds for the Black & Gold this season. The sophomore’s season low is 75.

Omaha’s Whit Merrifield (Davie County) homered in three of his first five games this season.

Dane Dunning struck out 13 batters, the most by an Intimidators pitcher in four seasons, but Kannapolis could not back him up offensively in a 2-1 loss to the Crawdads in 12 innings on Thursday at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory.

Kannapolis (1-7) managed 10 hits on the night with seven of them coming in the first five innings.

Dunning, the White Sox No. 11 prospect, worked a career-high eight innings.

The Intimidators continue the road series against the Crawdads  tonight at 7:05 p.m.

College baseball

Catawba will honor its 1992 undefeated South Atlantic Conference baseball team during festivities during its final home weekend of the season.

On Saturday, April 22, the returning members of the team will be recognized between the games of the doubleheader with Brevard which begins at 1 pm.

The 1992 Catawba team is the only SAC baseball team to finish its conference slate with an undefeated record. The team went 21-0 in conference play and was 38-7 overall, which was the best winning percentage in NCAA II that season.

GLEN ALLEN, Va. — Livingstone is tied for third place after the first day of the CIAA Golf Championship, here at The Crossings Golf Club on Thursday.

The Blue Bears shot a 325, tied with Chowan, but just three strokes behind leader Virginia Union (322).

Fayetteville State stands in second place after carding a 323.

Rounding out the field are Virginia State (359), J.C. Smith (362), Elizabeth City State (396) and St. Augustine’s (450).

Jordan Francis, Chowan senior from Boykins, Va., leads individually, scoring a 74. Also in the top five is the 2016 medalist, Phillip Harrison of Livingstone, who shot an 80.

The second and final round will be held today at the par-72, 6,674-yard course.
