SPENCER ó A reception to celebrate the new works of artist Pat Rendleman will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at the Green Goat Gallery in Spencer.
A Salisbury native, Rendleman had a show last year at Waterworks Visual Arts Center, “Alpha Genesis.”
Rendleman painted and then studied photography at the Penland School. Later, she studied painting and acting in New York City.
Rendleman became a cult figure after her appearance in the Sundance award-winning film “Sherman’s March” by filmmaker Ross McElwee.
In the mid 1980s, she went out West, showing throughout Southern California, including galleries in Santa Monica and Venice. Study at the International School of Art brought her to Umbria, Italy, where the American painter Knox Martin mentored her and changed her eye forever, she says. Rendleman says she abandoned perspective and gained an intuitive understanding that paintings must have light.
An invitation to exhibit her paintings at The Gallery at CNN Center in Atlanta brought her back to the U.S. in 1990.
Throughout the ’90s, Rendleman continued to exhibit in Georgia, Florida, California and North Carolina. She was selected as an artist-in-residence at Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic, where she exhibited her “Voodoo” series.
As a filmmaker she produced the documentary, “Junkanoon: The Dance of the Bahamas.” Rendleman has also been deeply influenced by the renowned documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark as they journeyed through Oaxaca, Mexico.
Rendleman’s paintings have entered a number of influential private collections, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills and the North Carolina Collection at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Rendleman has lived around the world, from the jungles of the Yucatan to the medieval villages of Umbria. In 2001 she returned to New York City, where her work has been exhibited in Chelsea, SoHo, Lincoln Center and the Ezair Gallery on Madison Avenue. She maintains a studio space at the New York Art Students League as well as one in Venice, Calif.
