Which news stories belong
on front page of the paper?

First, I’d like to state that I’m a fan of the Salisbury Post. I read it every morning, with my cup of coffee, to catch up on the local news. Our community is very fortunate to have a good newspaper. Everyone should subscribe.

Being a symphony supporter, I also want to thank the Post for the wonderful publicity we received prior to the performance of the most difficult Verdi “Requiem” last Sunday.

But I do have a question. Not understanding the exact workings of a newspaper, what constitutes headline material? Example: The headlines for last Thursday morning were “Fire at abandoned house,” complete with color pictures. Then on the third page at the bottom, not a spot to attract readers, was a wonderful and much appreciated article about the performance of the “Requiem.”

In my opinion, the paper needs to strive to print more positive news about our community on the front page. That’s what people read first, particularly out-of-towners, and form an opinion of our special area.

When something unbelievably noteworthy happens in our small community (and there are many impressive things), it should be on the front page (TA!DA!) with color pictures instead of “Fire at abandoned house.”

The “Requiem” performance was absolutely magnificent and deserved front page attention the next day. Accolades go to Maestro David Hagy, the symphony and soloists for accomplishing such a feat. Our town needs more positive recognition in a prominent place when something like this happens in our community. Many larger cities would be impressed.

Bravo once again to a group that adds so much excitement to our community.

Be sure to attend the May 11 George Gershwin symphony concert at Livingstone College. It’ll be another winner.

A good use for heroin?

I read in today’s paper about a judge stopping the use of a drug to execute killers. I read almost every day about someone dying from a overdose of heroin and also about police confiscating heroin in a drug raid.

Why don’t they just give the killers an overdose of heroin? Are they afraid they’ll die happy? Personally, I think they should use a guillotine. They won’t feel any pain very long.

Support your police

Want to hire more police officers? Get out of the political correctness bull and let them do their jobs. Pay them for the danger they face every day and quit letting people that have no experience in law enforcement try to run the department.

It’s pretty simple to see that crime is on the rise because the police are having their hands tied behind their backs. Wake up.
