Jimmy Lambert pitched eight strong innings and Seby Zavala homered in  the Kannapolis Intimidators’  6-2 SAL win against Hickory on Thursday.

Prep softball

In South Rowan’s  spring tournament on Thursday,  the Raiders lost to Stuart Cramer, 2-1,  when the Belmont school scored twice in the seventh. Brooke Lowery had two hits for South (6-12). Makenzie McGuire drove in South’s run in the seventh. Jalee Rollins pitched a complete game.

Carson lost to Lake Norman in South’s tournament, 5-3.

Carson had a 3-2 lead in the fourth after a two-run triple by Haley Howerton. Riley Stewart pitched a complete game for the Cougars (12-8).

Jordyn Huecker had three hits for Wildcats.

Carson out-hit Lake Norman, 7-6, but the Cougars made four errors.

Carson plays Stuart Cramer in the 4:30 p.m. game today, while South battles Lake Norman at 7:30 p.m.

Local golf

Fifty-one GARS members played at Warrior earlier this week.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Gary Schenk with a net of 61.47. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Lou Manning with a net of 61.07.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Ralph Brown with a net of 64.88. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Bert Bollinger with a net of 62.06.

Bill Saunders, 82, shot an 81; Lou Manning, 83, shot a 77; DickHatoway, 84, shot a 79; Ralph Brown 86, shot an 84; and BertBollinger 88, shot an 85.

Prep basketball

Cox Mill sophomore Wendell Moore Jr. was named to the MaxPreps All-America team.

Pro football

K.P. Parks (West Rowan) scored touchdowns in his first two exhibition games in Germany.

College tennis

Catawba’s Michael Patch was Honorable Mention on the All-SAC team.

NCHSAA

A.L. Brown athlete Savanna Hagler is the female winner of the William Clary Medal.

The Clary Medal recognizes an outstanding male and femal  athlete participating in varsity competition on at least two  teams.

The award is based on  excellence in athletic participation, extra-curricular activities and community service.

Hagler  competed in basketball, volleyball, swimming and softball in her high school career. She was all-conference in softball last season.

Hagler hopes to attend the University of North Carolina to study biomedical engineering.

David Ryan Perry from Croatan High is the boys winner. The winners will be honored in Chapel Hill on May 4 and will receive $2,000 scholarships.

West Junior Legion

West Rowan Junior Legion is holding baseball sign-ups on Monday, April 24, at 7 p.m. in the school media center.

The CIAA Championships start today  with Bowie State hosting.

The Saint Augustine’s men are looking for their 20th consecutive championship. Johnson C. Smith is the defending women’s champ.

Prep football

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced two of the high school championship games in December will be played in Durham at  Wallace Wade Stadium on the campus of Duke University.

College women’s tennis

Pfeiffer’s Olivia Nelms was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Year.

College baseball

Tied for first place in the SAC with Lincoln Memorial, Catawba opens a series tonight at home against Brevard at 6 p.m.

Catawba will honor the  1992 team that went undefeated in SAC play on Saturday between games of a doubleheader.
