Faith American Legion Auxiliary

The Faith American Legion Auxiliary Unit 327 has sponsored three high school seniors to attend the 78th session of Tar Heel Girls State, to be held June 11-17 at Catawba College. They are Paige Eagle, Maren Shuemaker and Anna Louise Lewis.

Girls State will have speakers including top North Carolina government officials. The development of two fictitious political parties including party platforms, campaigns and conventions culminates with the “election” of a slate of state officers. Parliamentary procedure is used to conduct all sessions, including legislative assemblies in which bills and resolutions are drafted for the General Assembly.

The installation of state officers, talent show and chorus are highlights of the week’s activities. The event is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Department of North Carolina.

American Legion Post 185

American Legion Post 185 is sponsoring Miguel Angel Bernal Flores of China Grove to attend the North Carolina Student Trooper Program. The program will be held Aug. 6-11 in Raleigh.

Kannapolis resident completes research project

Daniel Page of Kannapolis, a member of the class of 2018 majoring in civil engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, was a member of a student team that recently completed an intense, hands-on research project in Bangkok.

The project was titled “Mitigating Flooding in Khlong Toei.” In their project outline, the students wrote, “In Bangkok, Thailand, torrential downpours during monsoon season lead to flooding in the Khlong Toei slum, which prompts many health and sanitation concerns. We identified the key infrastructural contributors to flooding and created a collection of geographical maps based on our interviews, observations and measurements in order to convey to external stakeholders the susceptibility of certain areas within the slum. ”

All institute undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to address an important societal need or issue.

Salisbury native wins award

Ronald Sells of Salisbury has been named one of 49 winners of Greensboro College’s Wilkinson Award.

The award is named for the college’s 14th president, Howard Wilkinson. It recognizes freshmen and sophomores who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.6 or better on their college work.
