April 29 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This event will be a showcase of horses, vendors, and fun. Bring the whole family to learn all about these amazing animals, what we do at Saving Grace Farm, and more. Admission is free. There will be a BBQ plate fundraiser at lunch time.

Summer Camps

We give local children the experience of learning all about horses and gaining experience that can help them in everyday life. Our horses are specially trained to be calm and docile when working with people with special needs and disabilities, so they have great personalities. They are excellent at teaching leadership, respect, trust, empathy, compassion, assertiveness without aggression, and more.

The Arc of Rowan summer day program

The Arc of Rowan Summer Day Program is a six-week program, June 26 through Aug. 3, operating from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m., at three locations — North Rowan High School, South Rowan High School and Granite Quarry Elementary School.

The program offers training in self-help skills, academics, personal and social skills, sensory development, communication skills and gross/fine motor skills.

Daily activities include educational and social experiences for children according to their needs established in their Individual Education Plan (IEP), including indoor and outdoor activities and weekly field trips.

This program allows children to maintain and practice academic skills from their Individual Education Plan that would not be taught during the summer. The goal is to provide an educational, safe and fun opportunity during the summer.

The progress that each child makes during the summer is very rewarding — a child being able to complete a math problem on his or her own, learning to tie their shoes, learning to read new words, writing the words and or sentences down, learning to socialize with other peers appropriately, transitioning from one thing to another, are examples.

The Arc of Rowan Summer Day Program is licensed and approved according to standards established by the NC Child Day Care Licensing Division and the Division of Mental Health/Mental Retardation/Substance Abuse Services, and is reviewed and evaluated annually.

Staff is required to take part in training, including but not limited to: First Aid/CPR and Basic School Aged Curriculum Training (BSAC). All staff members have to take part in finger printing, criminal background checks and federal registry as required by the state.

Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Junior Sheriff’s Academy Summer Program

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office is affording young people in the community the opportunity to experience law enforcement first hand.

The First Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Junior Sheriff’s Academy is a one- week class that will be held July 17-21.

The academy will be similar in nature to that which actual police cadets attend. Students will learn the basic functions of a working sheriff’s office as well as have a chance to explore the idea of a possible career in this ever- changing and demanding field.

Students will attend regular classes with topics to include, but not limited to, North Carolina law, patrol procedures, traffic enforcement and many other areas of law enforcement. Students will have the opportunity to practice what they learn in practical exercises. The academy will be one week long and will be Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

The application will include a background check, medical release and parental consent forms.

The academy will consist of students who live in Rowan County and who will be entering grades eight through 10.

Students will be expected to take the program seriously and follow academy rules, which closely resemble school rules.

Due to the seriousness of the content of this program, immature behavior will not be tolerated and students failing to comply with behavior expectations may be removed from the academy.

Students will be chosen in the order that all paperwork is received and upon successful completion of the background check.

Complete, sign and return the application packet to the your School Resource Officer (SRO), drop it off at the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, or scan and email to Master Deputy W.R. Walker at William.walker@rowancountync.gov.

Class size is limited to 20 students. There is no cost to attend.

We will use critical thinking skills and an interactive learning methodology to reflect on the importance of a college education and how it can enhance your future, to learn what it takes to be successful in college, to identify the steps to apply for college, scholarships and financial aid, and to design a plan based on your passions and dreams after high school.

At the end of the week you will have your own personal plan and will have created a fun and interactive method (video or game) to introduce middle schools students to the benefits of a college education.

Lights, Camera, Action — Come try your hand at acting and all things theater. This week will be spent producing a play. You will have the opportunity to develop your acting skills as well as showcase your artistic abilities.

Participants will create their own costumes, scenery and props. Participants will also get to use their musical abilities in the plays’ musical numbers. End the week with presenting your play to family and friends.

Forensic Files

Fingerprint analysis, trace evidence collecting and DNA testing are a few of the skills you will need to learn and use in order to solve the mystery that is presented to you this week. Celebrate solving the week’s whodunit by hosting a thrilling mystery party for your family at the end of the week.

Classical Dimensions

Have you ever wondered what it was like to race a Greek war chariot or how the Romans built all of their beautiful archways and architecture? If so, this week is for you!

Come spend the week exploring the food, culture and specifications of ancient life in Greece and Rome. Invite your family to cheer you on as you try your hand in some classical Olympic sports!

Create and Code

Spend the week learning the basics of coding. You will use your new found skills to navigate robots through obstacle courses and create a game that you and your friends can play. At the end of the week, you will have the opportunity to show and allow your family to play the game that you created during the week.

Volunteer at RHM

Looking for something to do this summer that will allow you to help others?

The Rowan Helping Ministries’ food pantry at 226 N. Long St. needs volunteers to pack groceries for clients and keep shelves stocked.

Older teens and kids aged 10-14 with parents are needed for three-hour shifts Monday through Friday between 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Some weekend shifts also are available. There is no fee for volunteering.
