Salisbury improved to 8-0 in the Central Carolina Conference and 15-1-1 overall with a  3-1 overtime win over Lexington.

“Combine three games in three nights, one of the hottest days of the spring, prom on Saturday, and an incredibly aggressive opponent and you have the makings for a very difficult road match,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.

Lexington was assertive and scored first, only four minutes into the match.

“I think we were a bit cocky coming into the match and in many instances our minds were somewhere else,” Parrish said. “ After getting scored  on first for only the second time this season, we slowly came out of our slumber, peppering the Lexington box with shot after shot.”

Salisbury leveled  when Julia Honeycutt took on several defenders and then crossed a ball to Emily Mann, who one-timed a volley into the net.

The next goal would not come for nearly 75 minutes. The Hornets missed on 35 shots on goal and went to overtime.

Three minutes into the first overtime session, Honeycutt again beat a defender and sent a ball, this time to Ceci Cardelle, who provided the game winning tally.

In the second overtime, Anna Grace Woolly found Maria Capito, who touched inside past her defender to near post and concluded the scoring.

“Lexington gave us everything they had and I’m proud of the resiliency we showed tonight,” Parrish said. “It wasn’t the prettiest win by any stretch of the imagination, but when you don’t play collectively well and can still pull one out it says a lot about the heart, guts, and integrity of our team. Battling injuries and exhaustion, half of our starters could barely walk off of the field. I couldn’t be more proud of that.”

It was the 200th career win for coach Matt Parrish with the Salisbury  girls program.

Salisbury plays West Davidson at home on Monday with  the conference championship on the line.
