Prep Golf: Mustangs second in regional, back in the state event

East Rowan’s boys golf team shot 310 for second place in Monday’s 3A Midwest Regional at The Club at Irish Creek.
East senior Nick Lyerly shot 71 and finished second to Concord’s Stephen Carroll (70) in the competition for medalist honors.
The top three teams qualified for state competition at Foxfire on May 7-8. Marvin Ridge won the regional with a 299 total from its top four golfers. Asheboro took third with a 321 score.
South Rowan shot 324 and tied for fourth place.
East has been state runner-up in 3A the last two seasons. Individually, Lyerly was state champion as a sophomore when he shot 71-67 — 138 and tied for fifth last season when he shot 71-75 — 146.
East’s Bryson Sprinkle tied for fifth on Monday with a 73. Austin Miller shot 81, while William Garland and Alex Miller shot 85s.
South’s Parker Chavis shot 75 and qualified to compete in the state tournament as an individual.
Andrew Hubbard shot 82 for South, Andrew Coward shot 83, and Landon Johnson carded an 84. Andrew Jackson shot 89.
Carson’s Zain Tucker and Patrick Street turned in 81s.
Robinson’s Riley Smith (76) and Hickory Ridge’s Alex Heffner (77) joined Carroll and Chavis as individual state qualifiers from South Piedmont Conference schools. The top six golfers, not on one of the qualifying teams, make the state field as individuals.
The 2A Midwest Regional will be held today at Oakwoods Country Club in Wilkesboro.
