Kathy Dunn, treasurer, reported a successful financial year and presented Symphony Music Director David Hagy with a check for $4,000, fulfilling a pledge of $20,000 for the year. Kathy noted that over and above the pledge, an additional $5,000 had been donated to the symphony society’s educational program for the purchase of string instruments, repair of those on hand and music for the Youth Orchestra. Another $20,000 has been pledged for the coming year.
Joan Richard, membership chairman, reminded those in attendance that the annual membership drive would begin in August and end Sept. 15.
Volunteers were recognized and thanked for their work: Janet McCoy and Sydna Tripp, community volunteers, co-chaired the Festival of Spring Gardens; Ann Meredith and Diana Moustafa, Guild members, chaired the Christmas Tour of Homes; Kathy Dunn and Lynn Mills were presented with “Always Available” awards; the “Past President Who Never Quits” award went to Ann Meredith for the second time.
The “Allegro” award, a lifetime membership in the Salisbury-Rowan Symphony, was presented to Hagy for his outstanding contributions and support over the years and, most recently, his exemplary work on “Singing With Livingstone and Friends” at Varick Auditorium.
“Special Friends of the Guild” award was presented to Jean and Foster Owen, who will be leaving Salisbury this summer. Jean is a past president of the organization and their many contributions are too numerous to mention. A scrapbook was given to them, put together by friends and members. Betty Mickle gave a humorous “Where As” testimonial and Debbie Elliott showed a “This is Your Life” video. In tribute for all her many contributions and accomplishments, it was announced by Bob Pruehsner that a $10,000 symphony chair had been endowed in the name of Dr. Jean Owen.
With a reminder of the “Pops at the Post” concert on June 7, the meeting was adjourned and followed by a reception at the center.
