Symphony’s Summer String Camps and Youth Orchestra Camp registering students now

The Salisbury Symphony is offering Summer Strings Camp 9 a.m.nnoon, June 16-20 and 23-27 at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
A concert will be held on Friday, June 27 for the public. The camp is sponsored by National Starch & Chemical Company.
Youth Orchestra Camp will be held 9 a.m.-noon the two weeks of July 28-Aug. 1 and August 4-8 at Catawba College.
Ryan Peller, music director and conductor of the Salisbury Symphony’s Youth Orchestra, has designed a program that focuses on performance, rhythm and sight reading techniques. Youth Orchestra Camp is made possible by a grant from the Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation.
Costs for the camps are $100 for Summer Strings Camp and $70 for Youth Orchestra Camp. There are discounts for siblings and for those who wish to register for both camps.
The Symphony’s Positive Notes Scholarship Fund guarantees that any child who wishes to register will not be turned away due to lack of funds.
Space is limited, and the deadline for registering is June 6 for Summer Strings Camp and July 18 for Youth Orchestra Camp.

PPT auditions
Piedmont Players Theatre will hold auditions for its summer comedy, “Leading Ladies” at 7 p.m. May 27-28.
There will be a cold reading from script. Auditions are held on the third floor of the Meroney Theater, 213 S. Main St.
This comedy features Jack and Leo, two actors so down on their luck that they are performing Shakespeare on the Moose Lodge circuit in small towns in Pennsylvania. They hear that an old lady is about to die and leave her fortune to her sister’s long-lost children. Jack and Leo decide to impersonate her heirs to get the cash, but they soon discover there’s one complication-the heirs are nieces, not nephews. They forge ahead, dressed as women and attempt to avoid detection.
Rehearsals typically run Monday-Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. Show dates are July 17-20 and 23-26. For information, call 704-633-5471.
Artist guild
MOORESVILLE ó The next Mooresville Artist Guild meeting will be held at the Depot Fine Arts Gallery, 103 W. Center Ave. on May 27. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
Featured will be artist Dottie McHugh who will speak on and demonstrate encaustics techniques and show how some of her finished art work was created.
The meeting is open to the public.

Circus coming
CONCORD ó Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is rolling into the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center with “Boom-A-Ring,” an action-packed circus spectacular.
During a free all-access pre-show, which starts an hour before show time, the audience will have a chance to meet and get to know the performers personally.
The performance schedule is 7 p.m. May 22-23; 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on May 24; 1 and 6 p.m. on May 25; and 1 p.m. on May 26.
Tickets are $15 and $20 with a limited number of $25 floor, $35 VIP and $45 front row seats also available.

Art award winnerThis year’s winner of the Waterworks “Dare to Imagine” Award is Shannon Elrod.
In recognition of the importance of art in the life of our community, the Waterworks Visual Arts Center’s Dare to Imagine Award is presented to the Rowan County high school senior whose artwork most exemplifies the creative potential of the human spirit, heart, and hand. This honor includes a $1,000 scholarship and a solo exhibition of the selected student’s work at the Waterworks Visual Arts Center.Elrod of East Rowan High School was selected as the sixth annual recipient of this award for her highly-skilled and polished charcoal drawings.
Her work will be on exhibit at Waterworks Visual Arts Center May 30-Sept.6, with an opening reception Friday, May 30, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The daughter of Tim and Teresa Elrod, she is a member of the National Honor Society and attends First Baptist Church in Rockwell. She is active in East Rowan’s JROTC program, serving as battalion commander and drill team commander for the past two years. After graduation, she plans to attend Rowan-Cabarrus Community College for two years before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to study art education.
