Basketball star Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) had his jersey retired by Augusta University.

Sherrill is the leading scorer in Augusta and Peach Belt Conference history with 2,333 points. He was Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year as a senior.

Third-seeded Carson is scheduled to host fourth-seeded South Rowan for the SPC tourney championship tonight at 7.

In Wednesday’s Central Carolina Conference Championships, East Davidson’s girls and Lexington’s boys claimed team titles.

North Rowan’s Payton Russell won the 200 and 400, while  Chevy Blaire swept the throws.

Salisbury freshman Leah Cressler won the 800, 1600 and 3200. Salisbury’s NiTavia Corpening won the long jump.

Salisbury’s Tyrone Johnson won the 100 and 200. Salisbury’s Jibri Cowan won the pole vault.

North Rowan’s Dalynn Cuthbertson won the long jump and triple jump. Results are in Scoreboard for  the SPC and CCC meets.

West Rowan’s Cameron Butler broke the school record in the 800 meters in the SPC Championships.

Butler ran 1:57.08 to top the 37-year-old standard set by Jeff Hutchinson in 1980 (1:58.40).

In the MECKA Championships, Mallard Creek swept. A.L. Brown’s teams were second.  Hopewell’s boys and North Meck’s girls were third.

Prep tennis

The 2A Individual Midwest 2A tennis regional will be held today and Saturday in  Salisbury. CCC athletes will participate along with those from the Mountain Valley, PAC-6, Rocky River, and Western Piedmont conferences.

Prep soccer

East Rowan goalkeeper Lauren Weisensel finished the season with 367 saves and a 75-percent save percentage.

  

Local golf

CAMDEN, S.C. — After Thursday’s second round, Salisbury’s Michael Childress and his Cannon School teammate Lansdon Robbins are second in the 66th annual Carolinas Four-Ball Championship at Camden Country Club.

Childress and Robbins shot a 9-under par 61 on Wednesday and led 57 other two-man teams.  The duo made nine birdies during the first round, including finishing with five straight, to card a cool 28 on the back nine. They also had nine pars on the day and no bogeys.

On Thursday, Childress and Robbins were just 2-under par, slipping to 68 and 129 for their two-day score. They trail Paul Tucker-Brent Roof, who are at 128, after rounds of 63 and 65. The team of Ryan Marter and Jack Parrott is also at 129 (63-66).

The tournament now moves into a round of 32 match-play format. Childress and Robbins are seeded third and will play No. 30 Robert Dargan-David Dargan. There are two rounds on Friday and Saturday and the championship concludes the event on Sunday.

Intimidators

Mitch Roman’s two-run single in the sixth lifted the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 5-4, rain-shortened win vs. Augusta on Thursday.
