East Rowan’s softball season ended with a 3-2 loss at Pisgah on Wednesday in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

Caroline Johnson drove in both runs for East. She knocked in Bree Medlin for a 2-all tie in the seventh.

Medlin had three hits. Johnson and Maddie Trexler had two each.

East finished 7-14. Pisgah is 16-3.

South Rowan’s softball season ended with a 2-1 loss at Enka in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

Enka is 19-2 and undefeated at home. South finished 8-17.

A five-run third inning carried Tuscola to a 6-2 win against Carson in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

Katie Jewell homered for the Cougars. Carson finished 15-12. Tuscola is 12-6.

Prep soccer

South Rowan’s girls lost at Asheville, 5-2, on Wednesday in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.

Freshman Madison Henry scored her 30th goal for the Raiders. Katleyn Goodman also scored.

South finished 11-9-1. Asheville is 17-4.

College softball

Pfeiffer (44-6) takes on Carson-Newman(43-11)  today at 2:30 p.m. at Armstrong in the first round of the  Division II Southeast Regional No. 2.

For the third time in program history and second consecutive year, the Pfeiffer softball team is in the NCAA Tournament.

It’s been a record season for the Falcons, who enter tournament play with a program-record 44 wins and .880 winning percentage. For the first time in team history, the Falcons received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. They earned the automatic bid by winning the conference tournament in 2008 and 2016.

Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year Makenzie Pennell has burst onto the scene in her first season. The third basemen has already shattered the record for most RBIs in a season as her total of 56 is already eight more than the previous mark. The Taylorsville  native can become the first Falcon to post a batting average above .400 in a single season and her 67 hits are a new single season record.

Sophomore Vada Blue Sherrill followed up a brilliant rookie season with a tremendous second year for the Falcons. Coach Monte Sherrill’s daughter has scored 55 times in 50 games and has gone 40-for-42 in stolen base attempts. In just two seasons, Sherrill has scored 113 runs.

NCHSAA

  The North Carolina High School Athletic Association and FloSports have reached an agreement to allow FloSports to live stream the NCHSAA State Championships for baseball, softball and track and field in 2017. The championships will be webcast through FloSports online platforms at FloSoftball.com, FloLive.tv (Baseball) and FloTrack.org.

Local golf

Fifty-nine GARS members played an  ABCD tournament at Warrior.

‘A’ Flight winner was Gordon Correll with a net of 63.40. ‘B’ Flight winner was Ben Moore with a net of 63.07. ‘C’ Flight winner was Frank Masingo with a net of 63.10. ‘D‘ Flight winner was Gerald Osborne with a net of 64.01.

Five members shoot scores lower than their ages. Winsten Mahaffey, 80, shot a 79; Ben Moore, 80, shot a 79; Buddy Barger, 82, shot a 78; Lou Manning, 83, shot an 82; and O.J. Chandler, 87, shot an 80.

Prep golf

The Cannon School golf team won its fifth straight CISAA golf championship, played at the Carolina Country Club in Charlotte on Tuesday.

Cannon won by 14 shots over Charlotte Christian and four of its players (Michael Sanders 68, Lansdon Robbins 69, Salisbury’s Michael Childress 70, and Tim Bunten 71) were named to the all-tournament team.

Those four players were also selected to the All-CISAA first team.

College basketball

Davidson County Community Collge sophomore Zach Brann has signed with Pfeiffer University.

Prep track and field

West Rowan’s Cameron Butler will sign with Coastal Carolina next week.

West Rowan linebacker Miles Poteat will continue his football career and education at Division III Marietta (Ohio).

Pro football

Kevin Parks (West Rowan, Virginia) is doing well in Germany and scored four touchdowns in his first regular-season contest.

Parks, who is running back kickoffs for the Cologne Crocodiles, caught a screen pass for a 32-yard touchdown in his second outing and topped 200 all-purpose yards.

Intimidators

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Intimidators needed extra innings before breaking open a pitchers duel for a 2-1 win over the GreenJackets in 10 innings on Wednesday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta.  Kannapolis (16-15) earned its second extra-inning win of the season while improving to 9-5 on the road against the Southern Division.

With the game tied 1-1, Max Dutto walked to open the top of the 10th, and Joel Booker’s sacrifice bunt moved the go-ahead run into scoring position.  Mitch Roman belted a ball off the wall in center field, easily scoring Dutto for the Intimidators first lead of the night, 2-1.  Kannapolis went on to load the bases in the inning but stranded three on base in the top of the 10th.

Mike Morrison spun a perfect bottom of the 10th for the save (5) as Kannapolis improved to 7-5 in one-run games this season.

With the game tied, 1-1, and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Intimidators reliever Kyle Kubat struck out Augusta catcher and former Catawba College star Will Albertson to push the game into extra innings.

Kubat (1-2) earned the win, tossing a scoreless eighth and ninth inning while striking out three and limiting Augusta to one hit.

GreenJackets reliever Nolan Riggs (0-1) took the loss, allowing a run on two hits over 2 2/3 innings.

The Intimidators continue a three-game series tonight at 7:05 p.m.

The team returns home on Thursday, May 18, for a 7-game home stand against Hickory and Greenville.
