Professional musicians from the Ethos Consortium of Charlotte will perform a concert entitled “The Earth is Tired: A Concert for Renewal” at 8 p.m. tonight in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on the Catawba College campus. It is part of the Center for the Environment’s interfaith conference: “Faith, Spirituality and Environmental Stewardship.”
The concert features a variety of musical styles “all in praise of nature, in prayer for our care of it and in the hopes of offering inspiration for more behavioral change to all who attend,” says Paul Oakley, music director and conductor.
It includes early American song, an African chant, a Native American prayer, classical music by Franz Joseph Haydn and Randall Thompson and more contemporary music, including a performance of “What a Wonderful World.”
Omwake-Dearborn Chapel is an ideal site for this event as it overlooks the college’s 189-acre ecological preserve.
The violin soloist for this concert will be Calin Lupanu, the concert master of the Charlotte Symphony. He is also the concert master of the Ethos Chamber Orchestra.
Oakley, founder, music director and conductor of Ethos, is director of Choral, Vocal and Sacred Music Studies, an associate professor of Music, and also the college organist for Catawba College.
Tickets are $25. (It will be free for those who attend the conference.) All monies raised will benefit the work of the Center for the Environment.
