Area Sports Briefs: Carson’s Gadson wins 200 in track regional

South Piedmont Conference track and field athletes competed in the 3A Midwest Regional at Marvin Ridge on Saturday, with top -four finishers qualifying for state competition.

Carson’s McKenzie Gadson won the 200 in 25.64 seconds. She also was a qualifier in the 100, taking fourth in 12.81 seconds.

Gadson was sixth in the long jump (16-3.5 inches).

Carson’s Brenden Westbrook qualified with second place in the long jump (2nd, 22-0.5 inches) and third in the triple jump (44-8.5).

East Rowan’s Lee Sharum finished second in the pole vault (13-6), while South Rowan’s Tristan Gabriel (12-6) qualified with a fourth-place effort.

West Rowan had two state qualifiers in the 800, with Andrew Burgess finishing third (1:59.08) and Cameron Butler taking fourth (1:59.93).

West’s Jalen Houston took second place in the 110 hurdles (14.73).

Carson’s William Fuller will compete in the state meet in the wheelchair discus, 100  meters and shot put.

Other top performances were turned in by Houston (6th in the 100 in 11.06), East’s Sean Incardona (8th in the 800 in 2:02.82), East’s Faith Faller in the 3200 (7th in 12:07), West’s Deyquan Byrd in the long jump (6th with 20-3.5) and East’s Sam Wall in the triple jump (6th with 41-11). West’s 4×100 boys relay team was seventh, while South’s 4×800 girls relay team was sixth.

Prep soccer

Cox Mill won against Central Cabarrus, 6-1, in a second-round 3A match,

Hickory Ridge scored two goals late to rally past Hickory, 3-2, in a 3A second-round match.

Prep baseball

West Davidson took advantage of six errors and rolled to an 11-4 second-round win against Wilkes Central in the 2A state playoffs on Friday.

South Point topped Robinson, 5-3, on Saturday in the second round of the 3A playoffs.

College track

Charlotte’s freshman Zachary Marchinko (Carson) placed seventh in the men’s 10K in the Conference-USA Championships.

Marchinko ran 31:53.

College softball

Pfeiffer was rained out on Saturday and will play host Armstrong State today at noon in the Southeast Regional in Savannah, Ga.

Pfeiffer is 2-0 in the double-elimination regional No. 2.

Local golf

Charlie Barr of Salisbury won the 14-15 age group of the Tarheel Youth Golf Association  one-day event at Bradford Creek in Greenville, N.C., on Saturday.

He shot an even par 72.

Barr tied for second overall in a field of 66 players.

He qualified for entry into the N.C. Jr .Boys Championships.

Intimidators romp

All nine starters hit safely for Kannapolis in Saturday’s 11-2 win at Rome.

One night after a power failure halted play, Kannapolis (18-15) pounded 17 hits to take the opener of a four-game series.

  Seby Zavala paced the offense, going 4-for-5.

at the plate for his second career 4-hit game.  The Kannapolis catcher also collected four hits for the Intimidators on May 19, 2016, at Asheville. Tyler Sullivan and Brandon Dulin each added three hits while Mitch Roman drove in three.  Kannapolis’ 11 runs are the second-most by the team this season, just shy of the mark set in a 12-5 win over Augusta on May 2.
