South Rowan’s American Legion team beat Wilkes County 4-1 on Friday behind strong pitching by winner Weston Church, Randy Shepherd and Walker Snow, who notched a save.
Caleb Shore had a double and a triple for South, which has won four in a row. Maverick Miles had two hits and knocked in two runs. Ryan Bostian scored twice and stole a base.
n Mocksville tops Kannapolis
Daniel Welch hit a two-run homer but it wasn’t enough as the Kannapolis Legion (3-3, 2-2) fell to Mocksville 8-5 on Friday. Kannapolis hosts rival Concord tonight at Veterans Field.
n Intimidators lose
The Kannapolis Intimidators were shelled by Lexington 8-1 at Applebee Park on Friday.
Anthony Carter, who entered with a 1.92 ERA, allowed seven earned runs and nine hits.
The Intimidators continue a series with the Legends tonight. They’re back home Monday.
n Coastal Plain LeagueJerry Sands (Catawba) homered for the Wilson Tobs in Thursday’s opener, a 7-4 loss to Fayetteville.
n Wade Moore (West Rowan, N.C. State) went 2-for-3 for the Forest City Owls in a 4-2 opening-night victory against Gastonia.
n Alex Fairweather (Catawba) pitched seven strong innings as the Asheboro Copperheads opened with 6-4 victory against Martinsville.
Ryan Query (A.L. Brown, Catawba) and Daniel Wagner (South Rowan, Belmont) had two hits each for the Copperheads.
n Middle School baseball
Mitch Galloway was the winning pitcher as China Grove beat West Rowan 7-6 in a semifinal of the Rowan County middle school tournament Friday.
Eric Tyler had three hits for the Red Devils while Bobby Richards added two.
No. 2 seed China Grove meets top-seeded Erwin on Monday at 6 p.m. at China Grove for the title.
n West meeting
West Rowan basketball coach Mike Gurley will hold a one-hour parent-player meeting on Thursday, June 12 at 6 p.m. in the school lobby.
The meeting will cover the requirements and expectations if a student wishes to play for the Falcons, summer and offseason plans. For more information, call Mike Gurley at 704-798-2074.
n Catawba golfer advances
Catawba’s Kelsey Babos, a rising junior, has qualified for the USGA Women’s Amateur Public Links Championships. She shot a 72 on Wednesday at the Manakiki Golf Club in Willoughby, Ohio, to advance to the finals. The 2008 Championships will by held June 16-21 at the Erin Hills Golf Club in Erin, Wisc. It marks the second straight year Babos has qualified to play at a national level.
n Corbin Hills golf
The Corbin Hills Ladies competed this week in their annual Grace Rodgers Spring Handicap Golf Tournament.
Winner with the low net for the two-day event was Cindy Carmazzi.
Second low net went to Shirley Baucom. Karla Swanson and Ruth Bowles tied for third low net.
Becky Isenhour had the low gross score.
n Mountaineers win Cup
Appalachian State men’s teams won the Southern Conference’s Commissioner’s Cup, representing overall athletic excellence, for the 2007-08 school year.
The Mountaineers won an outright SoCon championships in outdoor track and cross country and tied for championships in football and basketball.
Furman placed second.
n Catawba softball camps
Catawba has announced summer camp dates.
At Whitley Field, all-skills camps will be held from June 23-26 and July 14-17 with a pitcher/catcher camp from July 7-9. In addition, at the Davie Youth Complex, Catawba will hold a camp from June 16-19.
The all-skills camps at Catawba run from 9 a.m. until noon and cost $100.
The pitcher/catcher camp with be from 6-8 p.m. and will cost $75 and $50 for those who also attend an all-skills camp. Camp is for ages 6-18.

The camp in Davie will be held at the Complex on Farmington Road. The all-skills camp will run from 9 a.m. until noon and will cost $110. The pitcher/catcher camp will be held from 2-4 p.m.. and will cost $100. The cost is $150 for those attending both camps. n Challenger soccer camp
Challenger Sports, largest soccer camp company in the United States, has been invited to host a British Training Camp in Kannapolis at Walter M. Safrit Park during the week of July 28-Aug. 1.
The camp runs Monday through Friday and each child will be coached by a member of Challenger’s British coaching staff flown to the USA to work on these programs. Challenger will hold more than 1,800 British Soccer camps this summer and will coach 90,000 players between the ages of 3 and 18.
Each camper will receive a free camp T-shirt, ball, free gift and player evaluation. In addition, any child who signs up online at least 45 days prior to camp will receive a British soccer replica jersey (value $30).
