Carson junior Owen White has been named South Piedmont Conference Pitcher of the Year.

White was 8-1 with an ERA of 0.33.

He pitched four complete games and two shutouts. He struck out 94 and walked 14 in 64 innings.

White was undefeated in the SPC. His lone loss was 1-0 on an unearned run on opening day against Davie County. He pitched a no-hitter in his second start of the season against East Rowan. The most hits he allowed in a game this season was five.

West Rowan’s Seth Graham and  Robinson’s Ryan Hodges were honored as co-coaches of the year.

West won the regular season championship.

Central Cabarrus’ Cameron Kepley, an Appalachian State-bound senior,   was named SPC Player of the Year.

West Rowan catcher Trevor Atwood, shortstop Brett Graham, infielder Brandon Walton and pitcher/infielder Austin Love made All-SPC.

East Rowan pitcher John Owen and shortstop Chandler Blackwelder made All-SPC.

Carson first baseman Ben Shoaf and pitcher Maddux Holshouser joined White on the All-SPC team.

South Rowan shortstop Tyler Shepherd, pitcher Walker Joyce and second baseman Austin Chrismon made All-SPC.

CPC baseball

Davie County’s Cody Hendrix, Chris Reynolds and Carson Whisenhunt made the All-Central Piedmont Conference baseball team.

North Davidson outfielder Austin Beck, expected to be a first-round draft pick in June, was named CPC Player of the Year.

College baseball

East Carolina third baseman  Eric Tyler (South Rowan) was named to the All-American Athletic Conference first team.

Tyler, a co-captain , batted a team second-best .342 (78-for-228) with six home runs, 38 RBIs and 37 runs.

He collected at least one hit in 45 of 56 games this season which included a pair of double-digit hit streaks (12 and 10 games).

He set an ECU and AAC record reaching base in 39 consecutive games from March 11 to May 18, while earning league hitter-of-the-week honors May 1.

Tyler ranks among the league leaders in hits, doubles and total bases.

ECU catcher Travis Watkins (Cox Mill) also made the all-conference team.

Legion baseball

Rowan County’s scheduled home game with High Point was washed out on  Wednesday.

The game with Kernersville that was scheduled for tonight also has been postponed.

Rowan is scheduled to play at Kannapolis on Friday.

College track

Western Carolina’s Devaniel Dale (East Rowan) was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year.

Dale was the highest scoring freshman at the conference meet after registering 18.5 points with second-place finishes in the 200 and 400 meter dashes.

Dale also was a members of the  Catamounts’ 4×400  championship relay team.

Dale set personal bests in both individual events with a time of 21.46 seconds in the 200 and 47.95 in the 400.

N.C. Central sprinter Jaleesa Smoot (Salisbury) was one of 21 student-athletes recognized as members of the  MEAC outdoor track and field All-Academic Team.

Minor leagues

  Seby Zavala’s clutch hitting forced extra innings, but the Intimidators fell to the Greenville Drive, 6-2  on Wednesday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at Intimidators Stadium.

Zavala hit a walk-off single to left field in the first game for a 2-1 victory.

  Kannapolis (24-20) took two of three games in the series against the Southern Division-leading Drive.

Kannapolis is at Greensboro tonight.

Justin Seager (NW Cabarrus) hit his first homer of the season for the Double-A Arkansas Travelers on May 21.

Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) picked up a win for the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers on May 21.

Parnell is 2-2 with a 4.26 ERA in 13 relief outings. He’s struck out 16 in 19 innings while walking nine.  He’s allowed one homer.

MLB

Jordan Jankowski (Catawba) made his debut in the big leagues on Wednesday for the Houston Astros.

Jankowski struck out the side in the top of the ninth against the Tigers,  including Ian Kinsler, but he allowed a triple and a homer.
