The two-day  36th Edgar Welch Memorial Golf Tournament was played May 24 at Corbin Hills and May 25  at the Country Club of Salisbury.

The conditions included a  weather-related postponement,  a rain and lightning delay and soggy conditions.

Susan Morris, a 36-time participant, and multiple  winner, teamed up with three-time winner Mechelle Kuld to win the Low Net tournament. The overall winners come out of the Rowan County division.

The Low Net Winners and overall champions from the Open Division are Phyllis Durland and Debra Hathaway.

Beth Shafer, friend of the Welch family,  presented the trophies, sponsored  by Anne Welch Stuart, to Morris and Kuld.

Intimidators

  Micker Adolfo and Antonio Rodriguez homered, but the Intimidators fell to the Greensboro Grasshoppers 10-4 on Saturday night at First National Bank Field.

With two more home runs, Kannapolis (25-21)   hit 11 homers in the three-game series.

Greensboro starting pitcher Jordan Holloway picked up his first win of the season. Holloway (1-1) tossed six innings and allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. I’s starter Yosmer Solarzano (1-4) took the loss allowing five earned runs on six hits while walking four and striking out four.

  Kannapolis continues a seven-game road trip with the final game of a four-game set against Greensboro tonight.

Prep girls soccer

In a fast-paced 4A state championship game, it was the Titans of West Forsyth who prevailed in overtime, 4-3, over Cardinal Gibbons to win the school’s first girls soccer state championship.

Riley Terry unleashed her right foot on a free kick from 35 yards out that found the back of the net in the 98th minute during the second and final overtime period, lifting the Titans to the title.

The two-time defending 2A champion Carrboro Jaguars quickly settled into the 2017 title game against West Stokes.

The Jaguars netted two goals within three minutes of each other midway through the first half to take a 2-0 lead over West Stokes on their way to a 3-0 victory. The win lifted the Jaguars to their third straight 2A state title.

The Weddington Warriors held off a valiant second-half effort from Corinth Holders to win the Warriors’ second straight state championship, 1-0 on a goal by Morgan Macia.

Franklin Academy stormed back from a three-goal deficit   to force overtime and eventually beat Community School of Davidson for the 1A title.

Community School of Davidson had its way in the first half, scoring three goals in quick succession at the 30-minute mark of the opening half.
