The Annual Euart Reunion
The annual Euart reunion was held on Sunday, June 11, at Bostian Heights Fire Department. The covered dish meal began at 1 p.m. with announcements by President Cathy Webb Powell, followed by prayer by Bradley Adams. There were 44 family and friends present. Pauline Webb was the oldest in attendance and Alexis Brooke Gibson, daughter of Kristin and Joey Gibson, was the youngest. Traveling the farthest distance were Casey Scott and Ryan Nichols of South Carolina. Married the longest at 36 years was Chris and Robbin Euart. Flowers were presented by family members in memory of those who have passed: Carolyn Euart Morgan and Carl Euart; and William and Louise Yost. The next reunion will be held on June 10, 2018.
The weekend of June 24 and 25, Ham Radio Operators from around North America will head for the hills during their annual Field Day event. Field Day is Ham Radio’s open house. Hams will show the science, skill and service Ham Radio brings to your community. Ham Radio is for everyone. The Rowan Amateur Radio Club will operate from Sloan Park off Hwy 150 again this year, so come on out, see what it’s all about and try operating one of the radio stations.
The Rowan Redbuds
The Rowan Redbuds Garden Club will meet Thursday, June 22, at 1 p.m. at the Miller Gardens. Guests are welcome. For more information call Carolyn Alexander, president, at 704-637-0928.
Open house retirement party
An open house retirement party for Rick Eldridge, executive director of Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, will be held on June 22. Also honored will be Steve Simpson, information and assistance program manager, and Susan Davis, information and assistance program assistant. Open house is from 3-4:30 p.m. at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, 1120 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.
SC State Ceramic Association
Mad Ceramic and Ellis Park Ceramic students did well at the SC State Ceramic Association competition at the Jamil Temple in Columbia, S.C. on June 9-10. Competing were: Novice ceramists Trudy Williams and Libby Sigmon; Hobbyists Laura Deal and Marilyn Colvin; Master Tricia Hardy. Williams’ Turtle won Best of Category and a first place prize. Sigmon won the Novice “Jasmine” trophy, Best of Category and first place for her “Fall Leafman” planter, first place for Raccoon and a second for Green “Leafman.” Deal won the Hobbyist “Jasmine” Award, Best of category and first place for Ornament Plate, a Best of Category and first place for Witch on the Moon, and first place for Indian vase. Colvin took first place for Basket. Hardy won a fifth Masters Trophy for Foal with hand-painted “Holiday Scenes for 2017” (the theme of this year’s competition), as well as a Best of Category and first place for a red cardinal plate, two second places for a tray with horses, a textured vase with horses and an Honorable Mention for a plate with a tree frog.
Calling Dragon Boat volunteers
Volunteers for the fourth annual Dragon Boat Festival on July 29 will receive a free T-shirt and two complimentary drink coupons.
July 28: Help with set-up or be a boat wranglers for team practice.
Festival Day, July 29: Early morning set-up help will get materials to the information table/tent, raise tents, and do team check-in.
Also needed: boat wranglers (your feet will get wet); boat marshalls (help teams line up); results runners (help spread the news of which team is winning); volunteer check-in and information table (for volunteer sign in and visitor questions); sales (beer or soft drinks/water).

“The Longest Day” will take place on June 21. People around the world, including 39 teams in and around the Western Carolina region, will participate in this day about hope — dedicated to all those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Whether it’s choosing a favorite activity, hosting an event or joining a team, participants will ignite a global conversation about Alzheimer’s disease, the brain and other dementias as part of Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month in June.
