Today: Trinity Presbyterian celebrates 150 years

On Sunday, the anniversary service startd at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Jerry Lytle Cannon, pastor of C. N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church of Charlotte as the guest speaker.

Dr. Cannon is a native of Kannapolis, received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA., his Masters of Divinity Degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center-Johnson C. Smith University, Atlanta, Ga. and his received his Doctor of Ministry Degree from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.

He currently works with the Rebound Shelter, Women’s Shelter, Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous Ministries, RALN (HIV) Ministry, AARP Bible Ministries, Athletics Ministry, Fine Arts Ministry, Steel Drums, Drama and Catawba Chorale.

In addition, he has served as a member of the Board of Trustees, Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary;Goodwill Industries of Central Carolina; faculty member of Union Theological Seminary and Davidson College.

The church was organized in the fall of 1867, one of the many churches organized by the Freedom Board of the Presbyterian Church USA, along with the founding of Johnson C. Smith University of Charlotte and Barber Scotia College of Concord. 

Alfreda B. Cowan is the anniversary chair, and Rev. Olen V. Bruner is host pastor.

 

First UCC summer sermon series kicks off

First United Church of Christ, 207 W. Horah St., will be doing a Summer Sermon Series July 16-Aug. 27. The series is titled “Bless to Me: Celtic Spirituality.” Services begin at 11 a.m. each Sunday. For more information call 704-633-2723.

 

St. Luke Baptist homecoming and revival

St. Luke Baptist Church, 410 Hawkinstown Road, will hold its annual homecoming and revival beginning Sunday.

The 11 a.m. speaker will be the Rev. Marcus L. Fairley. Following the service, dinner will be served in the fellowship hall.

The 3 p.m. guest speaker will be the Rev. Dr. David L. Bracken, pastor of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church.

Revival services continue July 17-19 at 7 p.m. nightly with guest speaker Bishop Derek Kelly, pastor of New Faith Full Gospel Fellowship in Lexington.

 

Homecoming at St. Matthew Missionary Baptist

ROCKWELL — St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church, 508 Watkins St., will observe homecoming on Sunday. The speaker for the 11 a.m. service will be the Emeritus Rev. Paul Jones of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. The 3 p.m. speaker will be the Rev. Rodney Eldridge of New Smith Grove Baptist Church in Lexington. Dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m.

The revival will begin Wednesday, July 19 at 7 p.m and will continue nightly. The speaker for the three nights will be the Rev. Dr. Nilous M. Avery II, pastor of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

 

Family and Friends day at Old Smith Grove View Baptist Church 

LEXINGTON — Old Smith Grove View Baptist Church, 8826 Linwood Southmont Road, will hold its annual Family and Friends Day on Sunday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Host pastor is the Rev. James A. Ledbetter III.

 

Erwin Temple CME Church hosts Star Day Program 

WOODLEAF — Erwin Temple CME Church, 155 Erwin Temple Road, will be hosting a Star Day Program on Sunday at 3 p.m. Host pastor is the Rev. Ervin L. Hannah Jr., and the guest speaker will be the Rev. Curtis Cummings, pastor of New Shepherd Missionary Baptist Church of Cooleemee.

Star Day is a scholarship fundraiser for Omega Chapter 242, Order of the Eastern Star, PHA, Cleveland.

 

Woman’s Day at Shady Grove Baptist 

EAST SPENCER — On Sunday at 3 p.m., Shady Grove Baptist will celebrate its annual Woman’s Day. The Rev. Diane Roberts of Mt. Calvary Holy Church will be the guest speaker.

The Rev. Roberts joined Mt. Calvary in 1975 under the leadership of Bishop Harvey L. Rice and was licensed to preach in 1989. The Rev. Roberts served as assistant pastor in 1994 and co-pastor under his leadership.

 

Usher board anniversary at Third Creek AME Zion 

The Usher Board of Third Creek AME Zion Church will celebrate their anniversary on Sunday at 3 p.m. The service will be rendered by the Rev. Zacharias Allen Sr. Dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m. in the Glen G. Grayson fellowship hall. The Rev. Harold Gordan is host pastor.

 

Holy Order service at Smith Chapel Apostolic Holiness Church

CLEVELAND — United Cornerstone University (UCU) and President Bishop Dr. George B. Jackson announce a Service of Holy Order on Sunday at Smith Chapel Apostolic Holiness Church at 5 p.m. Ministers Brenda Lewis and Jerry Brown will be ordained elders.
