OTTAWA ó The Los Angeles Kings acquired center Brad Richardson from Colorado on Saturday as the second day of the NHL draft proved much quieter in terms of trades than the previous night’s wheeling and dealing.
The 23-year-old Richardson had 19 goals and 21 assists in 136 games with Colorado over parts of the last three seasons. He had two goals and three assists in 22 games with the Avalanche this season, adding 40 points in 38 games with Lake Erie of the AHL.
Colorado received a second-round selection from the Kings, taking goalie Peter Delmas with the 61st choice overall. Los Angeles had gotten the pick from Detroit in the trade that sent defenseman Brad Stuart to the Red Wings on Feb. 27.
Phoenix picked up defenseman Alex Bourret from the New York Rangers in the only other trade of the day involving professional players.
Bourret, chosen 16th overall by Atlanta in the 2005 draft, has yet to play in the NHL. He had nine goals and 24 assists in 54 games with Hartford last season, his third straight in the AHL.
The Coyotes’ latest acquisition followed Friday’s deal with Florida that saw the Arizona team pick up Panthers captain Olli Jokinen in exchange for defensemen Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton, and Ottawa’s second-round pick in the draft.
With that pick, 49th overall, Phoenix drafted forward Jared Staal, the brother of Carolina’s Eric, the Rangers’ Marc, and Pittsburgh’s Jordan, all previous first-round draft choices.
HURRICANESRALEIGH ó The Carolina Hurricanes figured they had a good idea of who they’d take in the second round of the NHL draft. That was before they saw one of their highly rated prospects was still available.
The Hurricanes grabbed forward Zac Dalpe in the second round Saturday, adding a player they didn’t expect would still be on the board. Dalpe is the 16th-rated North American skater by the NHL Central Scouting Service.
HOSSAOTTAWA ó Marian Hossa told the Pittsburgh Penguins he intends to test the NHL free agent market, and the forward expects to attract lucrative offers once bidding begins July 1.
