Area Sports Briefs: Strong rounds by local golfers fall short of qualifying for U.S. Junior Amateur

Two young Salisbury golfers played well on Monday at the U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier at the Country Club of Salisbury, but neither made the necessary top three to advance.

Charlie Barr shot a 1-over par 72 and Michael Childress carded a 3-over 74, as 90 players competed for the three spots.

Barr tied for 15th place and Childress was in a tie for 31st.

Advancing were Akshay Bhatia, of Wake Forest, who shot a 5-under par 66, Joseph Pagdin of Orlando, Fla., also at 66, and Aman Gupta of Concord, who fired a 67.

The U.S. Junior Amateur begins July 17 at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan.

Minor leagues

Joel Booker had four hits, including a homer and a game-tying hit with two outs in the ninth, but the Kannapolis Intimidators lost at Delmarva, 5-4, in 13 innings on Monday.

Kannapolis (33-28) fell three games back of the first-place Hagerstown Suns with a four-game series against the division’s top team opening in Kannapolis tonight.

Former East Rowan star Bobby Parnell’s first two relief outings for the Charlotte Knights have been stellar. He has one save.

Junior Legion

West Rowan won against Salisbury, 7-6, in a league game on Monday.

Carsen Bailey and Luke Waggoner had two hits each for West.  Scout Nichols was the winning pitcher.

Wests host East Rowan tonight in a league game.

Carson lost, 7-6, at the Kannapolis Cardinals.

Daniel Leonard had three hits for Carson and drove in two runs. Ryan Street and C.P. Pyle had two hits each.

Prep volleyball

Carson rising senior middle blocker Lindsay Elmore has committed to Queens’ volleyball program. Elmore had 243 kills, 104 blocks, 70 digs and 40 aces for Carson last season.

She was all-county in 2015 and 2016.

CCC awards

West Davidson’s Brett Lingerfelt (football, track) was named the male athlete of the year for the conference, while Lexington’s Bailey Gray (soccer, swimming) was named the female athlete of the year.
