SALISBURY — Salisbury Academy was named an N.C. Green School of Excellence this spring, making it one of only five in the state to hold that distinction.
Eight other schools received award.
The Green Schools Program, under the auspices of the Center for the Environment at Catawba College, confers the awards.
“I am so proud of our two advancing schools and seven newly recognized schools,” said Katie Cavert Ferrell, coordinator of the program. “It is not easy with limited resources, budget constraints and only a finite amount of time. But the teachers have found creative, inspiring ways to integrate the exploration of nature into their daily lessons, and the students are committed to making a positive impact in their own schools and communities.”
An N.C. School of Excellence is the highest award the program offers. It is given to schools that show strong commitment to a sustainable campus and environmental education.
“The values that the N.C. Green Schools Program fosters — environmentalism, conservation and connectedness with the natural world — complement Salisbury Academy’s mission of developing stewards of the community and earth,” said Beverly Fowler, head of the school. “Salisbury Academy’s advancement to an N.C. Green School of Excellence distinction is a testament to the innovation and dedication of our students, staff and school community. We are thrilled to be recognized at this level by N.C. Green Schools and deeply honored to be one of just five N.C. Green Schools of Excellence in the state.”
Alexandra Shadroui, Salisbury Academy’s Green School coordinator, said the engagement of the staff and student body is a source of great satisfaction.
“When you get to experience a group of third-graders sitting still and quiet, observing a pair of bluebirds care for their young on a bluebird trail that our own eighth-graders planned and installed — these are the moments I will remember most,” she said.
John Wear, executive director of the Center for the Environment, said Salisbury Academy has shown dedication in its green efforts.
“This program plants the seed of environmental stewardship in young people,” Wear said. “That is imperative if we want to help ensure a sustainable future.”
The N.C. Green Schools Program promotes sustainability in the state’s public and private schools from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. It helps teachers connect and share ideas, offers resources and tools to help them start green initiatives, and recognizes schools that meet specified goals.
