Freddie Lamont Lynn passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday.

The 64-year-old Lynn was a volunteer assistant basketball coach at Catawba for 14 seasons during Jim Baker’s head coaching tenure with the Indians.

Lynn, who was known as Freddie Dunlap in his playing days,  competed for coach Walt Baker, Jim’s father, at North Rowan High in 1969-70 and 1970-71.

He averaged 11.6 points in 1970-71 and helped the Cavaliers go 20-5 and win the North Piedmont Conference championship with a 14-2 record.

His biggest game was a 20-point game against Mooresville that season.

Lynn’s favorite player  and idol was New York Knicks guard Walt Frazier

Lynn played on the Campbell College (now Campbell University) varsity basketball team from 1973-75 and lettered twice for the Camels.

After graduating with a sociology degree, he played hoops in Europe for more than a decade, mostly in Belgium, before returning to the states.

Seventy-one GARS members played in foursomes at Rolling Hills.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Frank Masingo with a net of 57.79.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Lynn Shook with a net of 61.88.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Steve Kale with a net of 67.00.

Bob Stepanian had closest to the pin on the par-3 No. 10 hole.

Qualifying for the 15th annual Rowan Masters is set for June 17 at Warrior Golf Club.

Wood bat leagues

Michael Elwell (Catawba) has struck out 19 batters in 14 1/3 innings and has a 1.88 ERA after five appearances for the Springfield Sliders of the Prospect League.

Ike Freeman (East Rowan, UNC) is 6-for-16 in his first four games for the Coastal Plain League’s High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms.

South camp

Lady Raider softball camp will be held July 24-27 at the South field.

Camp is for grades 1-9 and is from 9 until noon daily. The camp is led by South head girls coach  Dean Mullinax along with current team members.

Cost is $75 and includes a T-shirt. Registration is due by July 1.

East basketball camp

East Rowan Basketball Skills Camp for rising 2nd-5th grade boys and girls will be held June 15-16. The cost is $40.

Camp for boys and girls grade 6-9 will be held June 19-21. Cost is $60.

Youth track

Hurley Warriors in AAU district championships in Charlotte:

Two Hurley Warriors broke AAU state records.

Will Blais, 9, won the 400 in a record-breaking 1:06.15. Blais won the 200 in 28.71. He was second in the 800 in 2:40.54.

Jalen Houston, competing in the 15-16 young men’s division, ran 14.86  and won the 110 hurdles while breaking the AAU state record.

Healso  was fourth in the 100 final in 11.41.

Top 16 in all events move forward to the Regionals in Charlotte, a qualifier for the Junior Olympics held in Detroit.

The  Warriors will be competing at the Jim Law Invitational at  UNC Charlotte this weekend.

Intimidators

  Tuesday evening’s game between the Kannapolis Intimidators and Hagerstown Suns  was postponed due to heavy rain.

The teams are playing a doubleheader today, starting at 5 p.m. They’ll make up Tuesday’s rainout as part of another doubleheader on Thursday, starting at 4:30 p.m.

This week’s homestand features the second annual Disney Vacation Giveaway Night on Saturday, June 17, where one lucky fan will win a $2,500 vacation to the Magic Kingdom.

Legion softball

  The Rowan County-Stanly County game was rained out on Tuesday.

Monday is a potential makeup day. Rowan is scheduled to play at Randolph on Thursday.

After a layoff,  Rowan County (9-0) returns to action tonight at 7 p.m. at Newman Park against Eastern Randolph  in a non-league game.
