Catawba’s women’s basketball team got a big road win on Wednesday at Queens.
Defense was again the key for the Indians in a 56-46 SAC victory at Queens.
Catawba (14-11, 12-9) took over fourth place in the league.
Antionette McPhail scored 16 points to lead the Indians. Chloe Bully scored 15.
Shonice Pettaway scored 20 for the Royals.

Kijuan Arrington led the Indians (7-18, 7-14) with 19 points. Tyrece Little scored 17.

South Rowan opened the baseball season with a 2-1 SPC win against Northwest Cabarrus on Wednesday.
“There were a bunch of good defensive plays that squashed rallies,” South coach Thad Chrismon said. “It was a very well-played game for opening day.”
South got strong pitching from starter Austin Corriher, Andrew Fulton and winner Burke Fulcher.
South broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh when singles by Peyton Penninger, Hunter Travis and Eric Goldston loaded the bases, and Tyler Fuller delivered the game-winning hit.
South is at Northwest on Friday afternoon.

Dillon Atwell struck out six and pitched a complete game on Wednesday’s opening day, and Carson beat Central Cabarrus 9-3 in SPC action.
“We didn’t plan on a complete game,” Carson coach Chris Cauble said. “We wanted to take him out around 75 pitches, but he pitched a complete game with 83. He was very efficient.”
Matt Jones plated the first run for the Cougars with a squeeze bunt.
Austin McNeill drove in three runs and had a two-run single in the seventh.
John Patella, Bryson Prugh and Matt Saul drove in runs for Carson, which broke open a close game with a four-run seventh.
Carson is home against Central Friday afternoon.

East Rowan’s baseball team got off to good start with a 9-1 SPC win at Cox Mill on Wednesday.
Connor Johnson struck out 10 batters in six innings.
Cox Mill scored in the first inning and led until the sixth when East put together a four-run rually.
Mason Doby walked, moved up on a sacrifice by Samuel Wyrick and scored on Michael Caldwell’s double.
Caldwell scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error. Ike Freeman’s double and Luke Setzer’s single boosted East’s lead to 4-1.
“Doby’s walk was really the key to the rally,” East coach Brian Hightower said. “He fouled off three pitches to draw the walk. We put some good at-bats together, and then Cox Mill ran out of pitching late.”
East plays Cox Mill at Staton Field on Friday.

Riley Myers and Harrison Smith combined on a one-hitter, and Salisbury’s baseball team beat South Stanly 4-0 on opening day.
Smith and Ryan Jones drove in two runs apiece in the non-conference victory.
“Any time you go to South Stanly and get a win, you have to be pleased,” Salisbury coach Scott Maddox said. “We’re ahead of where I thought we’d be. Riley dominated on the mound (for four innings) for it to be so early. Harrison battled through jams and showed a lot of maturity.”
Myers fanned eight. Chance Bowden had a double for the Hornets.
Salisbury plays at Davie Friday afternoon.
A.L. Brown opened the baseball season with an 11-2 win against East Meck on Wednesday.
Matt Brown was the winning pitcher. Zach Mullinax got a save. Trace Hagler and Joey Bonnarigo had three hits each.
Michael Ogden, Clint Comadoll, Abraham Post, Spencer Storey, Chris Derrick and David Derrick had singles wins as Salisbury’s boys tennis team beat South Rowan 9-0 on Wednesday.
Comadall-Chris Derrick, Storey-David Derrick and Hunter Carlton-Alex Julian were doubles winners.
South Rowan’s boys golf team shot 154 and won against Mooresville (174) on Wednesday.
Davis Richards fired a 33 to lead the Raiders.
Evan Neas (38), Josh Pope (39) and Parker Chavis (42) were other scores.
Leading Mooresville with a 38 was Jacob Whitcomb.
South plays in the Irish Creek Invitational March 3.
Catawba got a strong mound effort from Joe Watson (Davie) and beat Barton 5-3 in Wilson on Wednesday.
Watson held Barton to three hits the first five innings.
T.J. Wharton homered for the Indians (6-8).
Craig Brooks, Keaton Hawks, Cameron Beard and Blake Houston (South Rowan) had RBIs.
Ryan McClintock earned his fourth save with two strong innings.
Catawba’s softball team improved to 8-1 with a doubleheader sweep of Limestone on Wednesday.
Catawba won 7-3 and 5-1.
Katherine Shumaker drove in eight runs in the doubleheader.
Carley Tysinger won the opener in relief and also had three hits.
Caroline Turner was strong in the circle for the Indians in Game 2.
Catawba’s tennis teams overpowered Winston-Salem State on Wednesday.
Catawba’s men won 7-2m while the women cruised 9-0.
Catawba’s men are 7-7. The women are 7-8.
St. Leo rallied to beat Catawba’s men 9-8 on Wednesday.
John Scheich had three goals for the Indians.
GRU Augusta lost 82-73 to USC Aiken on Wednesday.
Brothers Keshun Sherrill and K.J. Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 15 apiece for Augusta.

Russ Penley, a former member at Corbin Hills, made a hole-in-one at Farmstead Golf Links.
Penley aced the 174-yard, par-3 No. 12 hole during a recent trip to North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Penley’s playing partners Danny Crosby, Rex Davis and Tommy Trexler witnessed the feat. Perry Voncanon, Grey Medinger, Larry Boyer and Jimmy Cruse also were part of that trip and witnessed the shot.

• The first round of the eGolf Tour’s Palmette Hall Championship in Hilton Head, S.C., was suspsended due to heavy rain.
Albemarle’s Brad Childress was named to Campbell basketball’s all-decade team for the 1980s.
He was a four-year startig point guard for the Camels and is in the Campbell Hall of Fame.
Davidson announced its schedule on Wednesday.
Davidson will play Catawba at home on Sept. 7. It will be the first Catawba-Davidson game since 1987.
The Catawba game contest will be Davidson’s second game. The Wildcats open on Aug. 30.

West Rowan Middle’s 7th-graders won 50-46 against Erwin.
Chantal Robinson scored 28 points for West Rowan Middle. Hannah Pratt scored 10, and Breanna Burns had six for the Bulldogs.
Laura Weisensel scored 15 points to lead the Eagles. Zynoria Winford scored 11, Maddie Trexler scored eight, and Iyahnna Neal had five.
On Monday, March, 3 at 6 p.m.,there will be an informational meeting about the YMCA Warriors track and field team in the boardroom of the J.F. Hurley YMCA.
The Warriors organization is for athletes from 6-18. The Warriors are an AAU and USATF licensed team. Their season runs from March 10 to Aug. 2. This is a traveling team.

Salisbury Parks and Recreation is accepting team registrations for a spring men’s open softball league and preseason tournament.
The preseason tournament starts on March 17. The regular season starts on April 14.
The coaches meeting will be held on Monday, March 10, at 6 p.m. at Hall Gym.
