Ham Radio Operators Field Day event

June 24-25: Ham Radio Operators from around North America will head for the hills during their annual Field Day event. Field Day is Ham Radio’s open house where Hams show the science, skill and service Ham Radio brings to your community.
The Rowan Amateur Radio Club will operate from Sloan Park off Hwy. 150 in Salisbury again this year.
Q: What is Field Day?
A: Field Day is an annual event sponsored by the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL), the main purpose of which is to hone the individual and collective operating skills of federally licensed amateur radio operators.
By using ONLY emergency power like batteries or generators, and setting up in remote locations far away from the comfort of our homes, we increase our ability to operate under adverse conditions. This helps to assure that the next time there is a disaster and the power goes off, we will be ready to assist with emergency communications.
Field Day also provides an opportunity for the Amateur Radio Community to demonstrate their skills in a non-emergency setting, allowing the public to see how emergency communications actually works, up close and in person. Everyone is welcome.
The Rowan Amateur Radio Society has participated in Field Day activities for more than 40 years. We usually begin setting up at about noon on Saturday and operate for 24 consecutive hours, shutting down at noon on Sunday. Lee Street Theatre’s ninth season comes to a close a with a whole new take on a timeless classic, Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.”
Salisbury’s Jenny Hubbard’s new adaptation of the love story that has captured hearts for over two centuries will be directed by Claudia Galup.
In the midst of the British Regency, the topics of love and money go hand-in-hand as the five Bennet sisters and their vibrant mother search for suitable husbands to inherit Mr. Bennet’s humble estate of Longbourn. When the daughter most like her father, the witty, intelligent, and highly judgemental Elizabeth Bennet, is introduced to the mysteriously handsome and overwhelmingly stubborn Mr. Darcy, an unconventional romance blossoms. Though the match is obvious, their budding relationship must survive the trials and tribulations of this gossip-strewn English society with jealousy and pride afoot.
The cast and crew are working hard to bring this classic romance to life, keeping the charm of the original story with a modern, quirky twist.

The 6th annual CHICKWEED ~ Celebrating Indestructible Women event runs 4-11:30 p.m. on July 22.

From fishing docks to circus cannons, bringing the touching and whimsical story of “Big Fish: The Musical” to life on stage is no easy task. The story jumps from present day Alabama to dream-like flashbacks from Edwards very bright and colorful youth as he tells his story to both the audience and Will, his son.

Special events this weekend in Kannapolis
KANNAPOLIS — The City has announced its lineup of concerts, movies, special events, Intimidators Baseball and of course, fireworks for 2017. All events are free to the public and will be held in downtown Kannapolis. Movies and concerts are held at Village Park and Veterans Park.

Corvette Club appreciation ceremony
In recognition of the club’s 20 years in existence, the Vette Set Corvette and Old Chevy Car Club will gather on June 24 from noon-4 p.m. at Kelsey Scott Park for a time of acknowlegement and appreciation. Salisbury’s Vette Set Club grew out of a core group of men in the Fairview Heights neighborhood who have been friends since they were kids.
The event begins at noon with an opening prayer, and at 1 p.m. Marvin Shaw will lead the dedication of the memorial to deceased members. Throughout the afternoon there will be food and door prizes and an award presentation. Merchangise vendors are welcome. Call Danny Thompson at 704-738-7049 to learn more. Family Day at The Cabarrus Arts Council
CONCORD — Join the Cabarrus Arts Council for Family Day on Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in The Galleries, 65 Union St. South. Each Family Day is different and may include creative art projects in The Galleries, a performance or movie in the Davis Theatre and even activities on the front lawn of the Cabarrus County Historic Courthouse. Organ recital by Alden Wright
China Grove — St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 326 N. Main St., will host a free organ recital by Alden Wright on Sunday, June 25 at 3 p.m.
He will perform works by J. S. Bach, Joseph Jongen, Felix Mendelssohn, Herbert Howells, Claude Debussy and Louis Vierne.
Alden is a rising sophomore at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. A native of Salisbury, he studied organ with Dr. Phillip Burgess and piano with Diane Freeman. He was awarded first place in the 2014 Columbia, S.C. AGO Young competition and the 2016 University of North Carolina School of the Arts Organ Competition as well as second in the Washington, D.C. AGO Franciscan Monastery Scholarship competition in 2015.
He was awarded the Robert & Ann Stigall Scholarship, sponsored by the Charlotte Chapter of the AGO from 2013 to 2015 as well as the Pogorzelski-Yankee Memorial Scholarship for undergraduate studies in 2016.
Alden served as music director and organist at Milford Hills United Methodist Church January 2015-June, 2016 as well as holding a position as intern at Christ church (Episcopal) in Rochester under the Roy E. VanDelinder Fellowship in 2016-2017.
