Area Sports Briefs: West Jr. Legion wins

West Rowan beat Salisbury, 13-2, in a Junior Legion baseball league game on Thursday.

JT Fecteau had three hits for West. Daniel Sell,  Luke Waggoner,  Dillon Simpson and Cameron Graham had two each.

Waggoner had three RBIs, while Fecteau and Simpson had two each.   

Simpson and Stephen Smith had doubles. Scout Nichols was the winning pitcher.

Legion softball

Rowan County’s game against Cabarrus County was rained out on Thursday.

Cabarrus is in first place at 4-0 after sweeping Stanly (1-3). Rowan is 2-2.

Legion baseball

The Rowan-Concord game rained out on Wednesday has been rescheduled for Monday and will be played at Newman Park.

Rowan’s June 30 game will be moved to Concord’s home field at Mount Pleasant High.

Intimidators

The Kannapolis Intimidators announced the promotion of seven players.

After helping the Intimidators win the SAL Northern Division first half,  starting pitchers Alec Hansen and Jimmy Lambert, relievers Kyle Kubat and Mike Morrison, outfielders Joel Booker and Jameson Fisher, and catcher Seby Zavala moved up to Winston-Salem.

Kannapolis opened the second half with an 8-5 win at Columbia on Thursday.

Yosmer Solorzano allowed two runs in six innings for the win.

Tim Tebow had two doubles for Columbia.

Academic stars

Queens rising senior swimmer McKenzie Stevens (Salisbury) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America  Academic All-America team.

Hunter Leckonby, a Chestnut Hill College rising senior  lacrosse player, is also on the Academic All-America team.

Leckonby is the daughter of Catawba AD Larry Leckonby.

George Mason rising senior Eric Edwards (Salisbury) has been named to the Atlantic 10  Conference All-Academic team for men’s golf.

Edwards, a finance major, made the A-10 All-Academic team and all-conference team for the fifth straight time.

Edwards set the single-season scoring record with a 71.70 average for the 2016-17 season.

Rowan Little League

Rowan Little League Minor softball will start its summer all-star star season tonight  at 7 p.m. against King Little League at Community Park on Hurley School Road.

Team members are Ella Doby, Andie Evans, Kennedi Fisher, Avrelle Harrell, Taylor Keller,  Cadence Lane, Emily Murphy, Ellasen Arden Nance, Olivia Polson, Campbell Schaen, Chloe Shank, Lauren Vanderpool, Ella Wilkinson and Ashley Yang.

Manager is Steve Yang and assistant coaches are Josh Schaen and Chris Evans.

Local golf

Match play in the Rowan Masters starts today at Warrior Golf Club.

The defending champion is Andrew Purcell (Carson, USC Upstate). He’s joined by 31 qualifiers. Michael Swaringen led qualifying with a 66.
