Meet David Freeze

Held at Rowan Public Library, 201 W. Fisher St., in the Stanback Auditorium. A brief presentation by Freeze will be followed by Q&A and a chance to talk to him one-on-one about his recent bike ride from Anacortes, Washington to Green Bay, Wisconsin.

 

White Family Reunion

The White Family reunion was held July 7-9 in Salisbury. More than 75 family members and friends attended this yearly event. This is the reunion’s 47th year.

A fish fry was held at the home of Valerie Sifford on Friday night.

The reunion banquet was held on Saturday at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Attorney Cheryl Walker-Davis of Harrisburg, Pa., presided over the program.

Recognition was given to the oldest and youngest members in attendance as well as those celebrating anniversaries, graduations, and other accomplishments.

Corrine Lytle Cannon was recognized as the oldest member in attendance at 96 years young and little miss Kaylee Darlene Miller was the youngest, at just 2 months of age. Mr. and Mrs. Stanton Miller along with Victor Wilkerson, all from Denver, Colo., were recognized for traveling the farthest.

On Sunday, the family worshipped at Antioch Baptist Church in Granite Quarry and afterwards attended an afternoon picnic at Dan Nicholas Park, hosted by Mr. and Mrs. David Hyman.

Bonita Robinson and Valerie Sifford, both of Salisbury, co-chaired this year’s reunion. Sharon Williams of Charlotte coordinated all of this years’ activities.

 

Life-long rowan county resident turns 100 years old

On August 23, 1917 Hazel Louise Curlee Craddock was born in Spencer, Rowan County, NC to William Thomas Curlee and Nellie Mae Pickler.

Hazel is the oldest remaining family member at age 100.

She and her younger sister (Margaret Curlee Clark) are residents at Trinity Oaks Retirement Center.

Five generations of family will attend her 100th birthday celebration on Aug. 19, 2017 at Trinity Oaks Retirement Center.

 

Salisbury Symphony forms chorale and announces open auditions

The Salisbury Symphony announces it will form a chorus in order to engage a wider number of community members, provide talented singers with an opportunity to perform in a first-rate ensemble and to ensure a group of high-quality singers are ready when major choral works are programmed.

The Chorale will give six concerts over the next two seasons.

The first concert will be as part of the Reformation’s 500th anniversary celebration held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Sept. 23 and jointly produced between the Salisbury Symphony and St. John’s.

For this first concert, the Chorale will be prepared by former Charlotte Symphony chorale director David Tang. He will prepare the Bach Cantata No. 80, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” The entire concert will consist of works based on this mighty hymn originally written by Martin Luther.

The Chorale’s second concert will be the Christmas sections from Handel’s Messiah.

Open auditions for singers will be held Aug. 7 at First United Methodist Church.
