From staff reports
Rowan County’s softball team split its third straight Legion doubleheader on Tuesday at Montgomery County.
Rowan was one out away from a Game 1 win and had a three-run lead, but Montgomery rallied in the final inning of regulation (the fifth).
“We were in control,” Rowan manager Todd McNeely said. “Then they got a bloop and a couple of walks and tied it up.”
Montgomery won 6-5 in extra innings with the aid of a controversial call.
Montgomery scored in extra innings on a slow roller down the third-base line. Rowan third baseman Ellen Yang let the ball roll foul, but the umpire ruled she touched it, and a run scored.
“She didn’t touch it and she made the right play,” McNeely said. “Just a tough break.”
Brooke Lowery hit a two-run homer for Rowan in the first game.

In the second game, Rowan bounced back behind pitcher Taylor Walton and won 11-3.
Walton pitched a complete game.
Maddie Trexler started the game off with a triple and scored when the throw to third got away.
Walton, Lowery and Liza Simmerson had consecutive doubles to key a big inning.
“We haven’t had a lot of chances to practice, and I don’t think we’ve played the way we’re capable of playing yet, but I’m pleased with what’s been going on,” McNeely said.
Rowan split at Randolph and at home against Stanly. A doubleheader against Cabarrus was postponed.
Rowan plays at home against Randolph County on Thursday. The doubleheader starts at 6 p.m. Games are five innings.
