Catawba rising senior baseball player Luke Setzer (East Rowan was named  South Atlantic Conference Male Athlete of the Year for the 2016-17 school year on Wednesday.

Setzer was a first team ABCA  All-America selection, while earning second team honors from the NCBWA and D2CCA.

He closed out the year ranked second in the nation with 102 hits and No. 1 in D-II with 178 total bases.  He scored 69 runs for the Indians, had 33 mult-hit games and hit 18 homers.

Carson-Newman soccer’s Lauren Wade is the Female Athlete of the Year.

Prep baseball

Carson rising senior Owen White is competing in the USA Baseball 18U Tournament of Stars through July 1.

White was one of 80 players chosen for the event and is the only one from North Carolina.

The 20-man squads are  named “Brave,” “Free,” “Pride” and “United.” White is on the “Free” roster coached by former Clemson coach Jack Leggett.

White pitched three scoreless innings on Tuesday, throwing 30 pitches and allowing four hits.

All four teams are 1-1 after two days.

  

Local golf

THOMASVILLE — Michael Childress, of Salisbury, was eliminated on Wednesday morning, during the match play round of 64 at the 50th N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship.

Childress, a senior at Cannon School, lost a very competitive battle with Charlotte’s Graham Chase, 1-up, in 19 holes, at Colonial Country Club.

Chase also won his afternoon match and advanced to this morning’s round of 16.

Childress was the only local golfer playing in the match play round, after Bryson Sprinkle, Charlie Barr and Parker Chavis were eliminated in Tuesday’s stroke play.

Pro basketball

Shay Steele (West Rowan, Morehead State) has signed a contract to play professionally in Spain.

Prep basketball

Rechon Black, a rising senior committed to UNC,  is transferring to Cox Mill.

Black starred at Concord as a sophomore and played at Montverde Academy in Florida as a junior.

At Cox Mill. Black, a 6-foot-8 guard will be teamed with Wendell Moore, one of the nation’s top rising juniors.

Cox Mill is the defending state champ in 3A.

Carson’s girls played a hectic June schedule, playing 26 camp games in a week and a half and going 23-3.

Carson won the Catawba camp team championship and also competed at Elon, Charlotte and in Wilmington.

  College softball

Former Catawba player Kathryn Geouge has been named the head coach at Flagler College, a Division II school in Florida.

Geouge started 208 games in four seasons as a player at Catawba (2007-10), finishing with a .308 batting average, 189 hits, 175 runs scored, 18 home runs and 106  RBIs.  Geouge was also a member of the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and an Academic All-American.

Geouge graduated from Catawba with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 2010 before earning her master’s degree in public health from Lenoir-Rhyne in 2013.

Geouge has been the associate head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Wood bat leagues

Jeremy Simpson (West Rowan, Catawba) is batting .300  in 22 games for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League.

Clay Young (Catawba) pitched seven shutout innings for High Point-Thomasville in the CPL on Wednesday for his first win of the summer.

Connor Johnson (East Rowan, Catawba) has been strong in the Northwoods League with 33 strikeouts in 27 innings. Johnson is 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA.

Hunter Shepherd (Cabarrus Stallions, Catawba) is 3-0 in the Futures League. Shepherd has a 2.91 ERA. He’s struck out 21 batters in 24 innings.

Minor leagues

Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) was the winning pitcher for the Charlotte Knights on Wednesday.

The Knights rallied in the bottom of the ninth to top Columbus, 7-6.

Parnell is 1-1 with the Knights.

Bryan Blanton (Catawba) made a successful debut  on Tuesday for a New York Yankees rookie team in Florida’s Gulf Coast League.

Blanton pitched a 1-2-3 inning.

Kelvis Valerio tossed six scoreless innings for Kannapolis, but the  Kannapolis Intimidators failed to provide any run support in a 1-0 loss to Hickory on Wednesday night at Intimidators Stadium,

The Intimidators host Hickory again tonight.

Legion baseball

After a night off, Rowan County returns to action at Mocksville tonight.

Rowan finishes the regular season at Concord on Friday.

Rowan will have a bye in the first round of the playoffs, so the next game at Newman Park will be opening game of the second round on July 4.

Legion softball

Rowan County (3-3) hosts Randolph County at Carson tonight at 6 p.m.

Junior Legion

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, East Rowan rallied to win 7-3 against Mocksville on a walk-off grand slam by Corbin Moss.

Charlie Klingler had a two-run single on a high bouncer over shortstop.

Moss also was the winning pitcher for East (20-0).

East starts the playoffs at home on Saturday.
