Area Sports Briefs: West’s Greene All-State

West Rowan catcher Parker Greene, co-player of the year in Rowan County, was named to the 3A All-State softball team on Sunday.

Greene, a rising senior, batted .508 with three homers and 28RBIs.

The team was announced by the N.C. Softball Coaches Association.

A.L. Brown outfielder Allie Baker and pitcher Ashlynn Stokes made the 4A All-State team, along with Davie pitcher Olivia Boger and slugger Sierra Ferguson.

Other SPC players on the 3A All-State team included  Hickory Ridge’s Gracyn Polk and Lindsey Powell; Cox Mill’s Paysia Reed, Kayla Smith and Madison Michael, and Central Cabarrus’ Jordan Baker, Kasey Rowden, Riley Tucker and Elaina Bost.

Gray Stone’s Alyssa Herlocker made the 1A All-State team.

West Davidson’s Olivia Sharpe and Jenna Burkhart made the 2A All-State team.

Minor leagues

Tennessee’s Craig Brooks (Catawba) struck out four Double-A batters in 1 1/3 innings on Sunday.

Colton Laws (Carson) pitched two scoreless innings for the Bluefield Blue Jays on Sunday.

Junior Legion

East Rowan won at Stokes County, 3-1, on Sunday and clinched a first-round playoff series, 2-0.

Jake Davis pitched five shutout innings for undefeated East. Corbin Durham pitched the sixth, and Corbin Moss pitched the seventh for a save.

At the plate, Moss and Charlie Klingler drove in runs with key hits.

West Rowan’s season ended with a 4-2 loss to West Forsyth Blue on Sunday.

East Rowan will play West Forsyth Blue in an Area III semifinal series that will start on Tuesday. The site will be announced.

Legion baseball

Kannapolis split two games with Winston-Salem on Sunday at the Mount Tabor High field.

Kannapolis lost the first game, 3-1, despite fine pitching by Matt Baucom.

Kannapolis came back in the nightcap and won, 6-2, behind a complete-game pitching effort by Daniel O’Kelly.

Kannapolis got four runs in the first inning, with Justin Sponseller hitting a two-run homer and Cal Hubbard producing a two-run double.

Casey Ritchie smacked a two-run homer in the seventh to  close the scoring for Kannapolis.

The teams will play a decisive Game 3 tonight at 7 p.m. at Northwest Cabarrus.  The winner will play Rowan County. That series starts  at Newman Tuesday.

Mocksville wrapped up a series sweep of  Kernersville and will play Randolph County in Round 2.

Mooresville finished a sweep of Greensboro.

Intimidators

 Delmarva hit its way past Kannapolis to hand the Intimidators their sixth straight loss, 5-4, on Sunday evening at Intimidators Stadium.
Kannapolis (4-7 second half, 43-36 overall) allowed 12 hits, dodging early Delmarva scoring chances before giving up three runs in the sixth that proved to be too much to overcome.
