School of Music On the evening of June 26, 12 students of Marc Hoffman at the Salisbury School of Music performed a recital at the school.
The participating students included vocalists Megan Braun, Sarah Pope, Traci Leak, Adam Broyles and Elizabeth Bevels; pianists Hank Robins, Bryn Gilland, Javier Gurzon, Jared Goodman and Drake Burlingham; and voice and piano performers Paul Dandison and Micah Cottingham.
Alpha Kappa Alpha
On June 28, more than 50,000 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. participated in a synchronized ESP (Emotional, Spiritual and Physical) Global Centennial Walk, designed to raise awareness about the importance of fitness.
Leading the walk was International president Barbara A. McKinzie, who was joined by members from more than 900 chapters worldwide, including members from Canada, Germany, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.
Locally, members of Delta Xi Omega Chapter began their 1,908 steps, which symbolizes the founding date of the sorority, at the Salisbury Civic Center and continued along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Local president Lovetta Ealy Moore was joined by Renese Bates, Earnestine Krider, DrucieMoss, Marva McCain and JeanKennedy.The sorority will continue its Centennial Celebration in Washington, DC, the sorority’s birthplace, July 13-19. Another show of solidarity will begin Sunday, July 13, when members will again walk 1,908 steps to the Washington Convention Center, where the Centennial Celebration will officially begin.
President McKinzie will be joined by Dr. Ian Smith, spokesperson for the State Farm 50-Million Pound Challenge.
Graham honored
Maude Graham, 94, was honored with a party given by her Bible study group on June 30 at Wiley School Apartments where she was a former resident.
She now resides at Salisbury Gardens.
Mastro baptism
Lacey Caroline Mastro, daughter of Benjamin and Alisha Agner Mastro, was baptized Sunday, June 29, at First United Methodist Church in Salisbury. Senior Pastor Steve Haines officiated.
Lacey wore a solid white Victorian-length baptismal gown ornamented with fine pintucks and embroidery detailing, which was also worn by her brother, Ethan Shaun Mastro, on his baptismal day. The gown was given to the family by great-grandparents Nancy Agner and the late Ned Agner.
She wore a bonnet with lace detail and carried a Bible given to her by grandparents Pat and Rudy Mastro. She also wore a pearl bracelet, given to her by her mother and father.
A celebration luncheon followed the service at her parents’ home. Guests included: Ethan Mastro, brother; Claude and Debbie Bernhardt of Salisbury, grandparents; Robin and Patsy Agner of China Grove, grandparents; Rudy and Pat Mastro of Gastonia, grandparents; Nancy Agner of Salisbury, great-grandmother; Chris and Lauren Cook of Salisbury, aunt and uncle; Andrew and Julia Richardson of Belmont, aunt and uncle; and Jon, Shelley and Harper Palmer of Salisbury.
Lacey is also the great-granddaughter of Bill and Shirley Walker and Ruth Bernhardt, all of Salisbury, and the late John Cecil Bernhardt, and of Eleanor Young of Abingdon, Va., and the late Carl Young.
Yawn PatrolYawn Patrol Zone Toastmasters met July 1 at United Cabarrus Insurance. Tim Pryor was Toastmaster for the evening.
Toni Stovall was voted Best Table Topics, Ann and Ken Carroll were voted Best Speakers in a tie and Mike Craig was voted Best Evaluator. Officers who attended the Toastmasters Leadership Institute reported a successful and informative experience. Insook Lee was welcomed as a guest.
