Rowan County Little League Minors all-stars (10-under) won the softball state championship for the fourth straight year.

Rowan won the final against Wilmington, 9-1, on Monday in Huntersville.

Wilmington scored a run in the top of the first, but Rowan got three runs in the bottom of the inning and rolled from there.

Campbell Schaen pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts.  Leading hitters were Ashley Yang with  four, and Ella Wilkinson,  Cadence Lane and Schaen with two each.

Rowan will travel to Cunningham, Tennesee, for the Southeast Regional, starting July 21.

Junior Legion

East Rowan lost to Concord, 7-0, on Monday at Mount Pleasant High.

It was the first loss of the season for East (25-1).

“They out-hit us, out-played us, out-everythinged us,” East coach Brian Hightower said. “We didn’t field it great and they hit some balls hard.”

Jake Davis allowed four runs in the first two innings. Then Concord (19-5) got three more runs against Corbin Durham in the third.

The teams will play a decisive Game 3 in the series tonight at Granite Quarry’s Staton Field at 7 p.m. J.D. Basinger will be on the mound for Post 342.

The winner advances to play in the state tournament in Mocksville, while the loser’s season will end. The state event starts at Rich Park on July 14.

Legion softball

Rowan County lost twice at home on Monday to undefeated Cabarrus County.

Cabarrus won the five-inning games, 6-4 and 2-0.

Rowan (5-5) rallied for four runs in the fifth inning in Game 1, with Liza Simmerson, Tate Barger and Kary Hales getting key hits.

In the second game, Rowan loaded the bases in the fifth but couldn’t break through.

“We had our chances in both games against an undefeated team, and that’s all you can ask,” Rowan manager Todd McNeely said. “We got down in both games, but we continued to show a lot of fight.”

Rowan is still in second place in a five-team division and will hold on to second unless it drops two games at home to Montgomery County tonight in the regular-season finale.

The doubleheader at Carson starts at 6 p.m.

There will be Central Division playoffs, followed by a state tournament at  Catawba Meadows Park in Morganton on July 24-26.

Intimidators

  First-round draft pick Jake Burger homered and drove in  four runs, but the Intimidators fell to the Hagerstown Suns, 8-5, on Monday night at Intimidators Stadium.

Suns DH Anderson Franco hit two homers and drove in six runs.

Kannapolis (8-11 second half, 47-40 overall) had a four-game winning streak halted.

The Intimidators are off today before opening a six-game road trip to Greenville and Columbia on Wednesday.

  

College golf

  UNC Pembroke’s Alexandria Bare (South Rowan) has a 3.52 GPA in business administration  and was named an All-America scholar by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association.

Basketball camp

  Former NBA champion, Vernon Maxwell, will host a basketball camp in Kannapolis City Schools in early August.

It is open to students (ages 10-18) in this region.

Football camp

South Rowan Football Camp will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5, for kindergarten students through eighth graders.

The camp is from 9 until noon. Cost is $25. Campers receive a camp T-shirt.
