The graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority recently recognized eight education grant recipients from the 2017 graduating class.

Recipients from North Rowan High School are:

• Payton Russell, daughter of Thomas and Alisa Russell, who plans to attend North Carolina A&T State University.

• Hope Evans, daughter of Charles and Patricia Evans, who plans to attend St. Augustine’s University.

• Kiara Davis, daughter of Clavonne Davis, who plans to attend Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin.

• Aundrea Godfrey, daughter of Amelia Hasty-Rhodes, who plans to attend Belmont Abbey College.

Recipients from Salisbury High School are:

• Jacobline Doe, daughter of Jacob Doe and Miatta Kennedy, who plans to attend Winston-Salem State University.

• Shontrice Tracey, daughter of LaShonda Tracey, who also plans to attend Winston-Salem State University.

The recipient from West Rowan High School is Leighann Brooks, daughter of Larry and Patricia Brooks, who plans to attend UNC-Charlotte.

The recipient from East Rowan High School is Adrianna Kelsey, daughter of Kimberly Kelsey, who plans to attend North Carolina A&T State University.

The sorority’s major fundraiser is the Fashionetta Pageant, which was held June 24 in Livingstone College’s Varick Auditorium. All recipients were presented with certificates.

Since 1948, the local chapter has awarded more than $150,000 in grants and scholarships. About 2,000 girls and boys have benefited from the activities connected with the Fashionetta and Cinderella Ball fundraisers.

The sorority supports numerous local agencies including Rowan Helping Ministries, the American Cancer Society, Communities in Schools, Christmas Happiness, and UNCF.

Sh’Myra Moore is president of Delta Xi Omega Chapter. Thomasine Oglesby-Keaton-El is chairwoman of the scholarship committee.
